Job Description

Position: Veterinary Kennel Attendant

Coyne Veterinary Center in Portage, Indiana is seeking a dedicated Kennel Attendant to provide exceptional care for our boarding and hospitalized animals.

The Kennel Attendant plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of pets by managing their daily care, feeding, and exercise routines. This position requires keen observation skills to detect any signs of distress or changes in behavior, promptly communicating any concerns to veterinary staff. Responsibilities also include assisting technicians and veterinarians during medical procedures, maintaining accurate records, and engaging with clients both in person and over the phone.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver compassionate care to all boarding and hospitalized animals.
  • Conduct regular inspections of kennel areas to monitor pet health and behavior.
  • Identify and respond to emergency situations, collaborating with veterinary professionals.
  • Document any unusual eating or elimination patterns accurately.
  • Administer food and water according to established schedules and specific dietary needs.
  • Maintain cleanliness by disinfecting cages, runs, and common areas as required.
  • Ensure proper sanitation of litter boxes and pet living spaces.
  • Utilize personal protective equipment effectively while performing job duties.
  • Manage the movement of pets to outdoor areas for sanitation purposes.
  • Replace soiled bedding and maintain a hygienic environment.
  • Operate laundry equipment for cleaning hospital linens.
  • Provide grooming services, including baths and nail trimming, as needed.
  • Supervise pets during outdoor activities to ensure safety.
  • Assist with the check-in and check-out process for boarding pets.
  • Administer preventive treatments as directed by veterinary staff.
  • Ensure all animals are properly identified with ID collars.
  • Facilitate the transport of pets to treatment areas for medical care.
  • Collect samples for testing as requested by veterinarians.
  • Maintain cleanliness in all areas of the facility, including floors and waste disposal.
  • Keep outdoor areas tidy and free from debris.
  • Understand and apply proper animal handling techniques.
  • Provide informative tours of the facility to clients.
  • Manage inventory of food and supplies.
  • Be knowledgeable about infectious diseases and their prevention.
  • Communicate effectively with clients regarding their pets' care.
  • Participate in mandatory staff meetings to stay informed and engaged.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Capability to stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working in a noisy environment with animal sounds and equipment.
  • Adhere to safety protocols to minimize exposure to hazardous materials.
