Position Overview

About Us: CAMBA is a collective of dedicated staff, volunteers, clients, donors, and community partners committed to fostering an inclusive New York City. Our mission is to ensure that all individuals, particularly children and adults, have access to essential resources and support systems necessary for their success. We offer over 180 integrated programs across various sectors, including Education & Youth Development, Family Support, Employment Services, Health, Housing, and Legal Assistance. Each year, we serve more than 73,000 individuals and families, with a significant focus on youth and marginalized communities.

Program Focus: The Cure Violence Program targets at-risk youth aged 16 to 24 who may be involved in or affected by street violence. This initiative collaborates with community residents, local businesses, and organizations to implement a public health approach aimed at reducing gun violence. The program specifically addresses areas identified as high-risk for shootings, employing strategies to mediate conflicts, alter perceptions of violence, and foster a community-wide stance against gun-related incidents.

Role of the Outreach Specialist:

The Outreach Specialist is responsible for:

  • Conducting community outreach to promote the program and recruit participants.
  • Coordinating responses to incidents of violence within the designated area.
  • Creating promotional materials to raise awareness about the program.
  • Facilitating community support events and meetings related to violence response.
  • Reviewing documentation to confirm client eligibility for program participation.
  • Assisting clients in completing necessary intake forms and applications.
  • Maintaining organized client records and files.
  • Performing initial assessments of clients and their families, along with periodic follow-ups.
  • Collaborating with clients to overcome barriers to their goals and promote self-advocacy.
  • Acting as a liaison for clients with external organizations regarding education, healthcare, and housing needs.
  • Monitoring client progress through regular check-ins and documenting outcomes.

Qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma with three years of relevant experience, or
  • An Associate's degree with two years of relevant experience or
  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to engage effectively with diverse community members, including youth, activists, and law enforcement.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and random drug screenings.
  • No pending criminal charges or history of serious offenses.
  • Strong familiarity with the Brownsville community and its challenges.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Commitment to supporting families affected by gun violence.
  • Preparedness for outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

Compensation: The annual salary for this position is $50,000, with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health and dental insurance, a retirement plan with employer matching, and paid time off.
