Brooklyn, New York, United States Center for Justice Innovation Full time
Position Overview

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Center for Justice Innovation is a non-profit entity dedicated to collaborating with communities and justice systems to promote fairness, enhance safety, and empower individuals and neighborhoods. The organization aims to identify and address the challenges that lead individuals into the criminal and civil legal systems as early as possible. This is achieved through various means, including the development and implementation of programs that minimize incarceration and boost economic opportunities, conducting original research to identify effective practices, and disseminating insights gained from both programming and research to those working towards justice system reform globally.

The Center operates with a workforce of 800 employees and an annual budget of $100 million, achieving its mission through three core areas: creating and scaling operational programs to test innovative solutions, conducting original research to assess effectiveness, and providing expert assistance and policy guidance to justice reform advocates worldwide.

PROGRAM OPERATIONS

The Center's operational initiatives, such as the acclaimed Red Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Justice Center, are designed to explore new approaches, tackle complex issues, and strive for systemic reform within the justice framework. These initiatives encompass community-based violence prevention, alternatives to incarceration, reentry programs, and court-based efforts aimed at reducing unnecessary incarceration while fostering positive change for individuals and families. Through these efforts, the Center has achieved measurable outcomes, including safer communities, decreased incarceration rates, and improved public perceptions of justice.

RESEARCH INITIATIVES

The Center's research teams consist of social scientists, data analysts, and legal professionals, many of whom possess lived experience. They conduct research both domestically and internationally on a variety of issues related to the criminal legal system and justice. Their work includes evaluating programs and policies, conducting exploratory community-based studies, and translating research findings into actionable insights for community stakeholders, policymakers, and practitioners.

POLICY & EXPERT ASSISTANCE

The Center offers hands-on planning and implementation support to various jurisdictions focusing on reform in areas such as problem-solving courts, tribal justice, and strategies to reduce incarceration and crime. This assistance may involve data analysis, strategic planning, policy guidance, and hosting site visits to its operational programs.

POSITION SUMMARY

Brooklyn Justice Initiatives (BJI), the Center's largest operational project, aims to transform the criminal court experience in Brooklyn by providing judges and attorneys with meaningful alternatives to traditional bail, fines, and incarceration. BJI operates from the Kings County Criminal Court and community-based offices, comprising a team of social service providers, court resource coordinators, mental health professionals, compliance specialists, and others dedicated to enhancing the quality of justice. The Supervised Release Program (SRP) offers an alternative to incarceration by providing pretrial supervision, case management, and voluntary social services to individuals charged with offenses, using their arrest as an opportunity for positive change.

BJI is seeking Community Engagement Specialists for the borough's Supervised Release Program. These specialists will possess extensive knowledge and experience in addressing foundational needs through local service providers. They will utilize their expertise to support participants in attending court dates and engaging with services by meeting them in the community, providing navigation support, and facilitating connections between Case Managers, SRP Clinicians, and local service providers. Collaboration with the Clinical Director will be essential in building and maintaining relationships with local service providers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist participants in accessing services and accompany them to court or community resources.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Director to establish and maintain relationships with local service providers, understanding their services and eligibility criteria.
  • Identify additional service providers to evaluate the quality and accessibility of available services.
  • Develop and deliver presentations on local social service agencies to enhance referral processes.
  • Ensure accurate and timely data entry and documentation in line with program requirements.
  • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration across teams to identify successes and challenges.
  • Conduct outreach efforts within the community to engage participants.
  • Maintain professional relationships with court personnel, judges, attorneys, and service providers.
  • Participate in supervision and training sessions to enhance program knowledge and skills.
  • Attend project and community events as necessary.
  • Perform additional relevant tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Knowledge of or experience with the criminal legal, housing, child welfare, or mental health systems preferred.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team in a dynamic environment.
  • Effective collaboration with a variety of stakeholders, including judges, attorneys, and partner agencies.
  • Peer Navigator certification is valued but not mandatory.
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish) is strongly preferred.

POSITION TYPE: Full Time

COMPENSATION: The salary range for this position is $52,000 - $60,000, commensurate with experience. The Center for Justice Innovation offers a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, dental and vision insurance, disability coverage, life insurance, and retirement plans.

The Center for Justice Innovation is an equal opportunity employer committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including women, people of color, LGBTQIA community members, and those with lived experience in the criminal legal system.
