Brooklyn, New York, United States Rising Ground Full time
Overview

Position:
Trainer, Criminalized Survivors Initiative

About Rising Ground:

At Rising Ground, we believe in the potential of every individual to flourish when provided with hope and opportunities. Our organization delivers compassionate support and effective pathways to positive transformation, assisting over 25,000 individuals each year in overcoming challenges.

The STEPS program, dedicated to combating intimate partner violence (IPV), provides a range of trauma-informed and anti-oppressive services aimed at preventing IPV, advocating for survivors, and raising awareness about gender-based violence.

Since its inception in 1986, STEPS has focused on innovative, survivor-centered approaches, emphasizing that support for IPV survivors must align with anti-oppressive, anti-racist, and feminist principles to avoid perpetuating harm.

About the Criminalized Survivors Initiative:

For over three decades, the STEPS Criminalized Survivors Initiative has provided comprehensive clinical and legal advocacy to survivors of IPV or other forms of gender-based violence who have faced criminalization for their survival efforts.

We assist survivors confronting felony and misdemeanor charges across various regions.

Additionally, our program includes an Advocate/Counselor stationed at Family Justice Centers, alongside a Training team that leads the city’s comprehensive response to criminalized survivors.

Position Responsibilities:

Two Trainers will develop and enhance training programs and lead sessions aimed at educating city agencies and community organizations on recognizing and supporting criminalized survivors of gender-based violence.

The Training Team will conduct outreach to anti-IPV organizations, Family Justice Center staff, institutional defenders, DA offices, criminal justice reform groups, reentry organizations, and correctional service personnel.

Understanding the connection between direct service and provider education, Trainers will also engage in clinical and advocacy work with criminalized survivors in various settings.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Designing training materials and facilitating educational sessions for city agencies and community organizations.
  • Collaborating with survivors and team members to gather feedback on training content and delivery.
  • Conducting outreach to raise awareness about the challenges faced by criminalized survivors.
  • Collecting data to assess the training's impact and identify future directions.
  • Providing direct clinical and advocacy support to a manageable caseload of criminalized survivors.
  • Participating actively in weekly supervision and team meetings.
  • Engaging in planning and implementation discussions with city stakeholders.
  • Ensuring accountability to survivors by adhering to program policies regarding case documentation and participant consent.

Additional tasks may be assigned by the leadership of the Criminalized Survivors Initiative.

Qualifications:
  • Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW/LCSW), Licensed Mental Health Counselor, or a relevant graduate degree is required.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is strongly preferred.
  • Strong counseling and advocacy skills are essential.
  • Dynamic outreach, training, and facilitation abilities are necessary.
  • A nuanced understanding of gender-based violence dynamics and systemic oppression is required.
  • A meaningful commitment to healing-centered, anti-oppressive practices is essential.
  • High self-awareness and the ability to provide and receive constructive feedback.
  • Impeccable attention to detail and organizational processes.
  • Ability to work with flexibility, independence, accountability, and a sense of humor.

Benefits:
Medical, Dental, Vision, Paid Time Off, 401k, and opportunities for professional development.
