Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Life Skills Assistant to join our team at Tumwater School District. As a Life Skills Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with diverse needs, providing individualized attention, and promoting a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement accommodations and support strategies as defined by Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with varying abilities.
  • Attend to students' personal care needs, including transferring, toileting, diapering, personal hygiene, and feeding, as assigned.
  • Provide motor therapy activities as requested and assigned by nurses, therapists, or teachers.
  • Work with students who require severe support and medical care.
  • Recognize individual student needs and provide targeted strategies and interventions.
  • Address discipline in a positive manner, adhering to site procedures.
  • Participate in student de-escalation and restraint teams.
  • Assist classroom teachers and provide library support.
  • Supervise playground, lunchroom, and bus activities.
  • Perform health room duties, including leading or supporting health room operations with proper training.
  • Provide small group and individual instruction for various academic subjects, as defined by student needs.
  • Operate bus lifts, load and unload wheelchairs, and secure students in restraints and lap belts.
  • Monitor and maintain records and reports, correcting and charting work as necessary.
  • Prepare materials and maintain records related to IEPs.
  • Duplicate and construct site materials, order equipment for health rooms, playgrounds, and libraries.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student and staff information.
  • Establish and maintain excellent relationships with visitors, staff, parents, students, and administrators.
  • Foster a safe and orderly environment.
  • Possess knowledge of and enforce school district policies and procedures.
  • Attend planning meetings with teachers and special service staff, as requested.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and the school community.
  • Perform other paraprofessional, non-custodial duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Sufficient strength, balance, and mobility to safely transfer a motorically disabled person of 100 pounds in and out of a wheelchair with assistance.
  • Ability to carry students (up to 75 lbs) and climb or jump from emergency exits.
  • Ability to work with children who have a variety of disabilities.
  • Trained in de-escalation and restraint of students.
  • Willingness to be trained in areas of duty and to learn new skills.
  • Enthusiasm and appreciation for the unique individual characteristics of students.
  • Ability to work independently, as a team player, respond to emergency situations, and work in a stressful environment.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to use a variety of office equipment and input data and other information into school programs.
