Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Paraprofessional to join our team at Tumwater School District. As a Paraprofessional, you will play a vital role in supporting students with diverse needs, providing academic and personal assistance, and contributing to a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with students to implement accommodations and support as defined by Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • Attend to student personal care needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, toileting, diapering, personal hygiene, and feeding
  • Provide motor therapy activities as requested and assigned by nurses, therapists, or teachers
  • Support students with severe needs and medically fragile children
  • Recognize individual student needs and provide appropriate strategies and interventions
  • Address discipline in a positive manner, adhering to site procedures
  • Act as a member of a student de-escalation/restraint team
  • Assist classroom teachers and provide library support
  • Supervise playground, lunchroom, and bus activities
  • Perform health room duties, including leading or backing up the health room with appropriate training
  • Provide small group and individual instruction for various academics, as defined by student needs
  • Operate bus lifts, load and unload wheelchairs, and secure students in restraints and lap belts
  • Monitor and maintain records and reports, correcting and charting work
  • Prepare materials and keep records related to IEPs
  • Duplicate and construct site materials, order equipment, and maintain confidentiality regarding student and staff information
  • Establish and maintain excellent rapport with visitors, staff, parents, students, and administrators
  • Foster and maintain a safe and orderly environment
  • Possess knowledge of and enforce school district policies and procedures
  • Attend planning meetings with teachers and special service staff, as requested
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and the school community
  • Perform other paraprofessional, non-custodial job-related duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed
  • Experience working with children
  • Sufficient strength, balance, and mobility to safely transfer a motorically disabled person of 100 pounds in and out of a wheelchair with assistance
  • Ability to carry students (up to 75 lbs) and climb or jump from emergency exits
  • Ability to work with children who have a variety of disabilities
  • Trained in de-escalation/restraint of students
  • Willingness to be trained in areas of duty and to learn new skills
  • Enthusiasm and appreciation of the unique individual characteristics of students
  • Ability to work independently, work as a team player, respond to emergency situations, and work in a stressful environment
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to use a variety of office equipment and input data and other information into school programs
