Job Summary

Tumwater School District is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Paraprofessional Assistant to join our team. As a key member of our educational staff, you will provide critical support to students, teachers, and staff in a dynamic and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and staff to implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and provide accommodations and support for students with diverse needs.
  • Attend to students' personal care needs, including transferring, toileting, diapering, and feeding, as assigned.
  • Provide motor therapy activities and work with severe needs and medically fragile children.
  • Recognize individual student needs and provide appropriate strategies and interventions.
  • Address discipline in a positive manner and act as a member of a student de-escalation/restraint team.
  • Assist classroom teachers, provide library assistance, and supervise playground, lunchroom, and bus activities.
  • Perform health room duties, including leading or backing up the health room with appropriate training.
  • Provide small group and individual instruction for various academics, as defined by student needs.
  • Operate bus lifts, load and unload wheelchairs, and secure students in restraints.
  • Monitor and maintain records and reports, correct and chart work, and prepare materials and keep records related to IEPs.
  • Duplicate and construct site materials and order equipment as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student and staff information.
  • Establish and maintain excellent rapport with visitors, staff, parents, students, and administrators.
  • Foster and maintain a safe and orderly environment.
  • Possess knowledge of and enforce school district policies and procedures.
  • Attend planning meetings with teachers and special service staff as requested.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and the school community.
  • Perform other paraprofessional, non-custodial, job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Sufficient strength, balance, and mobility to safely transfer a motorically disabled person of 100 pounds in and out of a wheelchair with assistance.
  • Ability to work with children who have a variety of disabilities.
  • Trained in de-escalation/restraint of students.
  • Willingness to be trained in areas of duty and to learn new skills.
  • Enthusiasm and appreciation of the unique individual characteristics of students.
  • Ability to work independently, work as a team player, respond to emergency situations, and work in a stressful environment.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to use a variety of office equipment and input data and other information into school programs.
