We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Life Skills Paraprofessional to join our team at Tumwater School District. As a Life Skills Paraprofessional, you will play a vital role in supporting students with special needs in a dynamic and inclusive educational environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with individuals or small groups to implement accommodations and support as defined by IEP for academics, recreational activities, etc.
  • Attend to all student personal care needs as assigned throughout the educational environment.
  • Provide motor therapy activities as requested and assigned by nurse, therapist, or teacher.
  • Work with severe needs and medically fragile children.
  • Recognize individual student needs and provide appropriate strategies and intervention.
  • Address discipline in a positive manner per site procedure.
  • Act as a member of a student de-escalation/restraint team.
  • Assist classroom teachers.
  • Provide library assistance.
  • Supervision of playground, lunchroom, and bus.
  • Health room duties; lead or back up health room with appropriate training.
  • Provide small group/individual instruction for a variety of academics, as defined by student needs.
  • Operate bus lifts; load and unload wheelchairs; secure students in restraints, lap belts, etc.
  • Monitor and maintain records and reports; correct and chart work.
  • Prepare materials and keep records as related to IEP.
  • Duplicate and construct site material; order equipment (e.g. health room, playground, library).
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student and staff information.
  • Establish and maintain excellent rapport with visitors, staff, parents, students and administrators.
  • Foster and maintain a safe and orderly environment.
  • Possess knowledge of and enforce school district policies and procedures.
  • As requested, attend planning meetings with teachers and special service staff.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents and the school community.
  • Perform other paraprofessional, non-custodial, job related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Sufficient strength, balance and mobility to safely transfer a motorically disabled person of 100 pounds in and out of a wheelchair with assistance.
  • Have the physical ability to carry students (up to 75 lbs) and ability to climb or jump from emergency exits.
  • Ability to work with children who have a variety of disabilities.
  • Trained in de-escalation/restraint of students.
  • Willingness to be trained in areas of duty and to learn new skills.
  • Enthusiasm and appreciation of the unique individual characteristics of students.
  • Ability to work independently, work as a team player, respond to emergency situations, work in a stressful environment.
  • Effective interpersonal/communication skills.
  • Ability to use a variety of office equipment and input data and other information into school programs.
