Position Overview

The Lead Transportation Design Engineer is responsible for executing advanced engineering calculations, conducting alternatives analysis, and designing intricate transportation projects, which encompass sidewalks, bike paths, local roads, intersections, highways, and various transportation infrastructures.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting site visits and preparing CAD mark-ups.
  • Designing geometric roadway layouts and performing 3D corridor modeling.
  • Drafting project specifications and technical reports.
  • Calculating construction quantities and estimating costs.
  • Coordinating with clients and stakeholders.
  • Preparing project correspondence and drafting scope and budget documents.

The ideal candidate will exhibit a strong work ethic, a commitment to learning new design concepts, and possess exceptional organizational and communication skills.

A successful Lead Transportation Design Engineer should demonstrate proficiency in design and drafting fundamentals across at least one software platform, quickly learn and apply new 2D and 3D design concepts, ensure quality control of peer work, and mentor less experienced team members.

Collaboration is key; the candidate must work effectively with others, embrace constructive feedback, and seek guidance from senior team members when necessary.

Essential Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) at an advanced level.
  • Advanced knowledge of market sector software such as AutoCAD C3D and Microstation Connect/OpenRoads.
  • Proficient in 3D design and visualization tools (e.g., Revit, Infraworks) as applicable.
Technical Expertise

Candidates should possess:

  • A mastery of technical fundamentals.
  • The ability to provide innovative solutions to complex challenges and guide others.
  • Experience in quality control for moderately complex deliverables.
Project Delivery

Responsibilities include leading the production and quality control of:

  • Technical reports and memos.
  • Specifications and construction quantity calculations.
  • Design documents and construction plans.
  • Cost breakdowns and project proposals.

Understanding of budgets and schedules is crucial, as is the ability to prioritize multiple assignments to ensure timely and on-budget project delivery.

Client Interaction

Frequent communication with clients on complex projects is expected. The candidate will lead technical project meetings and engage as an industry expert during project interviews.

Supervisory Duties

The role may involve overseeing team operations, organizing workflow, and ensuring clarity in delegated tasks. Responsibilities may also include recruiting, training, and providing performance evaluations for team members.

Education and Experience

A Bachelor's Degree is required, with a Master's Degree preferred. Candidates should have a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience, or 14 years with an advanced degree. A Professional Engineer (PE) license is required, along with a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.

Physical Demands
