Senior Backend Systems Engineer (Billing Specialist)

Philo's video streaming service operates on a subscription model, offering a base plan along with various additional packages. We strive to deliver a seamless and efficient sign-up process, accommodating multiple payment methods, including direct card payments, digital wallets, and external platform options to enhance user satisfaction. Our continuous improvement efforts focus on enhancing user experience, boosting subscription conversion rates, and optimizing payment performance through comprehensive data collection, analysis, and experimentation.

We are in search of a passionate Software Engineer to aid in the expansion of our billing capabilities while enhancing performance for the benefit of our customers and our financial outcomes. As a vital member of our growing team, you will act as a technical leader, guiding the enhancement of our billing systems and serving as an internal expert on payment and subscription operations. Your collaboration will extend to the marketing team for innovative promotions, the support team for troubleshooting billing issues, the finance team for compliance and accounting, and the data science team for KPI analysis.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Enhance, implement, deploy, and monitor the Philo multi-biller billing system.
  • Collaborate with partners to engineer billing platform solutions that ensure a seamless billing experience while optimizing overall performance.
  • Work with internal stakeholders across marketing, support, finance, and data science teams to measure and optimize every aspect of our billing system.
  • Drive continuous improvements in the reliability, performance, accuracy, and security of Philo's billing services.
  • Develop and enhance tools for proactive monitoring and swift troubleshooting of billing performance and accuracy issues.
  • Establish robust reporting systems for finance and compliance teams to ensure accurate financial reporting and analysis.
  • Provide technical leadership to team members, contributing to system architecture discussions and mentoring newer engineers.

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in software development.
  • Proficient in developing with the programmatic API of subscription and/or payment management providers.
  • Experience with product/billing platforms is advantageous.
  • Understanding of payment networks, card authorizations, dunning policies, refunds, chargebacks, and reversals.
  • Demonstrated ability to build efficient and highly available software using languages such as Ruby/Rails, Golang, Java, or C++.
  • Experience in cloud computing environments utilizing modern deployment technologies.
  • Skilled in handling large datasets and making data-driven decisions, with familiarity in relational and non-relational databases.
  • Aptitude for effective collaboration and communication with both business and technical stakeholders.
  • Awareness of trends in the billing/subscription ecosystem that may influence payment management strategies.

Our backend code is primarily developed in Golang, NodeJS, and Ruby, with some components in C++ and Python. We operate our services on Kubernetes and embrace continuous deployment practices across our systems.
