Function

The Community Relations Committee of the City of Charlotte is seeking a Community Relations Specialist to oversee a comprehensive Nondiscrimination Ordinance Program (NDO).

Summary

This position entails delivering specialized community relations services, providing staff support for subcommittee initiatives, maintaining relationships with special interest groups, identifying community needs, addressing grievances regarding inadequate services or unfair treatment, and engaging extensively with community members. The role requires independent judgment and initiative, with performance evaluated based on discussions, metrics, and outcomes.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advise the community on anti-discrimination legislation and conduct training on complaint processing
  • Investigate discrimination complaints and participate in conciliation and public hearings
  • Address grievances related to inadequate services or unfair treatment by public entities and private businesses
  • Identify community issues and resources, and present findings to subcommittees
  • Establish collaborative relationships with community and human service organizations
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports
  • Perform additional related tasks as required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Background in social work, sociology, or related disciplines
  • Familiarity with federal and state civil/human rights laws
  • Understanding of community needs and human service resources
  • Strong analytical and investigative capabilities
  • Effective communication skills and ability to produce clear reports
  • Capacity to analyze and resolve complex issues
  • Ability to foster effective collaborations with diverse groups

Preferred Qualification

  • Experience in human services, community relations, or equal opportunity investigations
  • Proficiency in bilingual communication

Minimum Qualifications

A four-year college degree with coursework in social work, sociology, or related fields is required. Additional graduate-level coursework is advantageous, or equivalent experience and training in the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
