Function

The Community Relations Committee of the City of Charlotte is seeking a Community Relations Specialist tasked with overseeing a comprehensive Nondiscrimination Ordinance Program (NDO).

Summary

This position entails delivering specialized community relations services, providing staff support for subcommittee initiatives, maintaining relationships with special interest groups, identifying community needs, addressing grievances regarding inadequate services or discrimination, and actively engaging with community members. The role requires the exercise of independent judgment and initiative, with performance evaluated based on discussions, metrics, and outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise the community on anti-discrimination legislation and conduct training on complaint processing
  • Investigate discrimination complaints and participate in conciliation efforts and public hearings
  • Address grievances related to inadequate services or unfair treatment by public and private entities
  • Identify community issues and resources, and prepare reports for subcommittees
  • Develop collaborative relationships with community and human service organizations
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports
  • Perform additional related duties as required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Background in social work, sociology, or related disciplines
  • Familiarity with federal and state civil/human rights laws
  • Awareness of community needs and human service resources
  • Strong analytical and investigative capabilities
  • Effective communication skills and ability to produce clear reports
  • Capacity to analyze and resolve complex issues
  • Ability to establish effective partnerships with diverse groups

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in human services, community relations, or equal opportunity investigations
  • Proficiency in bilingual communication

Minimum Qualifications

A four-year college degree in social work, sociology, or related fields is required. Additional graduate-level coursework is advantageous, or equivalent experience and training in the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
