The Johns Hopkins University Police Department is looking for highly motivated individuals to fulfill the role of Police Officers. We are currently accepting applications from lateral police candidates who have a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a certified law enforcement officer in a full-service law enforcement agency (either in Maryland or another state). Applicants must possess Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions (MPCTC) Certification - OR - meet Comparative Compliance Standards.

Police Officers operate within a collaborative environment, upholding integrity, professionalism, compassion, and bravery to safeguard the lives and property of the Johns Hopkins community. Officers regularly interact with students, faculty, staff, and visitors to provide essential services and information. They will deliver campus police services across various locations, ensuring that the department leads in delivering responsive, high-quality, and customer-focused policing.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering community-oriented law enforcement services, conducting patrols, and implementing crime prevention strategies to protect life and property.
  • Supporting student and staff initiatives proactively while fostering positive relationships with the university community and surrounding neighborhoods.
  • Enforcing university policies and state laws while collaborating with other university personnel.
  • Leading with a modern policing approach to build public trust and ensuring daily supervision by a Sergeant.
  • Engaging in shift work with rotating days off.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Embody the vision, mission, and values of the JHPD while interacting with the university community and advocacy groups, coordinating resources to address community concerns.
  • Perform comprehensive law enforcement duties, ensuring the safety and protection of individuals and property through effective problem-solving.
  • Implement community policing strategies and patrol designated areas to identify safety hazards and report violations.
  • Maintain a visible presence to foster relationships with community stakeholders and deter crime.
  • Respond to emergency calls and take appropriate actions, including de-escalating situations as necessary.
  • Collaborate with Campus Safety and Security Command Staff in investigations of complaints and reported offenses.
  • Conduct investigations of incidents occurring during shifts and coordinate preliminary activities at crime scenes.
  • Direct traffic and assist with crowd management during events.
  • Provide safety information to the public and lead community safety programs.
  • Participate in specialized unit activities as directed.
  • Maintain and inspect assigned equipment and law enforcement tools.
  • Collect and preserve evidence as required.
  • Prepare cases for court and testify when necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with local and state law enforcement agencies.
  • Perform administrative duties such as answering calls and managing visitor logs.
  • Execute other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 20 1⁄2 years of age.
  • Two years of service with a full-service law enforcement agency at the time of application.
  • Must possess current MPCTC certification or have been certified within the last two (2) years or meet Comparative Compliance standards.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful completion of a recognized Police Academy Training program and a Police Field Training program.
  • Employees may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • A one-year probationary period applies.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Familiarity with modern law enforcement practices and relevant laws.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws and policies.
  • Capacity to build effective relationships within a diverse community.
  • Proficiency in operating law enforcement equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and analyze complex situations.
  • Sound judgment in decision-making.

Work Environment:

This role involves both indoor and outdoor work, often in various weather conditions. The position may require interaction with individuals under stress and the operation of a motor vehicle. The work environment is diverse, necessitating cultural competence in communications.

Physical Demands:

The role requires physical fitness, strength, and stamina, involving various physical activities such as running, lifting, and manual dexterity.

ADDITIONAL COMPENSATION INCENTIVES

CERTIFICATION INCENTIVE: $15,000 PAID UPON HIRE WITH CURRENT MARYLAND LAW ENFORCEMENT CERTIFICATION.

CITY RESIDENCY: 20% INCREASE OVER BASE SALARY FOR BALTIMORE CITY RESIDENTS.

NON-COMPETITIVE CAREER PATHWAY THROUGH POLICE OFFICER III.

ANNUAL STEP INCREASES.

This position is classified as a Lateral JHPD Police Officer with a starting salary of $70,000. The employee group is Full Time, with a schedule involving 12-hour shifts.
