POSITION SUMMARY:

The Baltimore Police Department is seeking a dedicated individual to serve as a Police Flight Officer. This role involves operating a helicopter to support law enforcement efforts in maintaining public safety and addressing criminal activities.

SALARY: $115,484.00

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must possess educational credentials from an accredited institution. For those with degrees obtained outside the United States, an evaluation for equivalency is required.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Qualified applicants will be considered for available positions for a minimum duration of six months. The Human Resources Director's decision regarding minimum qualifications is conclusive.

BACKGROUND CHECK: Candidates under final consideration for this role, identified as positions of trust, must authorize and successfully complete a fingerprint background check.

ROLE DESCRIPTION:

As a Police Flight Officer, you will operate a helicopter over the city to assist law enforcement personnel in controlling and reducing crime. This position does not involve supervisory responsibilities.

Officers in this role will work under general supervision and will be required to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. The work environment includes flying a helicopter, which may involve challenging weather conditions, night operations, and patrols in areas with potential hazards such as violent individuals and heavy traffic. The role requires moderate to high physical exertion, particularly in managing the helicopter and in situations that may involve pursuing and apprehending suspects.

SELECTION PROCESS:

All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list without further testing. Each candidate's training and experience will be assessed for relevance and adequacy. It is crucial to provide complete and accurate information on your application, as any vagueness or omissions may hinder your consideration for this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Candidates must have graduated from an accredited high school or possess a GED certificate.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 1,400 hours of total flight time is required, including 800 hours as Pilot in Command (PIC) and 700 hours in turbine helicopters.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Candidates must hold a valid FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with Rotorcraft-Helicopter and Instrument-Helicopter ratings, with no record of violations or suspensions. A current FAA Medical Certificate (Second Class or higher) and the ability to obtain and maintain a Maryland Police Training Commission Certificate are also required. Additionally, a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent out-of-state license is necessary.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Any waivers or limitations on the candidates' current FAA Medical Certificate will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Candidates must provide appropriate documentation of flight training and experience, such as logbooks and flight records.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the requirements for obtaining and maintaining an FAA Helicopter Commercial Pilot Certificate.
  • Understanding of the equipment, systems, and aerodynamic principles necessary for safe helicopter operation.
  • Proficiency in safely maneuvering and flying a helicopter.
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant laws, regulations, and policies related to law enforcement.
  • Capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow officers and police personnel.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to accept guidance and feedback while adhering to organizational protocols.
  • Competence in making sound decisions and managing emotions in high-pressure situations.
  • Capability to prepare reports and documents with attention to detail in spelling, grammar, and basic arithmetic.
  • Willingness to participate in and successfully complete all required training phases.
  • Ability to meet and maintain all criteria for state law enforcement officer certification.
  • Adherence to Baltimore City Police appearance standards for uniformed personnel.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:

Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to demonstrate that they meet the qualifications for this recruitment. Successful candidates will be placed on the certified eligible list for a minimum of six months. The examination will evaluate education, training, and experience as they relate to the position's requirements. Additional supplemental questions may be required to assess specific knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to the role.
