Position Overview: This role is designated for the 3pm to 11pm shift. We are in search of a Campus Safety Officer dedicated to delivering security services across the Homewood Campus and associated off-campus facilities and events. The officer will serve as a primary responder to address any critical incidents or situations affecting their designated area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct uniformed patrols and implement crime prevention strategies to safeguard individuals and property.
  • Provide proactive assistance to student and staff initiatives, fostering a positive relationship with students, faculty, staff, and local community members.
  • Collaborate with various University administrators during the initial and follow-up investigation of reported incidents.
  • Document criminal activities and disturbances, enforce University policies, state laws, and local ordinances, and maintain accurate records.
  • Work under the supervision of the on-duty Campus Safety and Security Shift Commander.

Specific Duties:

  • Patrol assigned areas using foot, bicycle, Segway Human Transporters, T-3 Patrol Vehicles, or other designated vehicles.
  • Engage in crime prevention and community policing initiatives.
  • Respond to both routine and emergency service calls, taking appropriate action to support the on-duty shift.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations while maintaining confidentiality and producing clear, concise reports.
  • Manage pedestrian and vehicle traffic as necessary and provide escorts and other general services to support the on-duty shift.
  • Be available for flexible shifts, including weekends and holidays, to assist with operational and special event needs.
  • Utilize various computers and equipment as part of routine job functions.
  • Deliver security services for the University’s on-campus and off-campus properties and events.

Requirements:

  • Must achieve certification as a Special Police Officer by the State of Maryland and comply with the Scope of Commission.
  • Successful completion of a University criminal background investigation is mandatory.
  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license with a clean driving record (no more than two current points).
  • Completion of a physical/health screening examination, including drug screening, is required.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Ability to operate various machines and equipment, including vehicles and office technology.
  • Certification to operate Segways, T-3s, bicycles, or other assigned equipment is necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with the University community.
  • Capability to work independently and manage stressful situations professionally.
  • Proficiency in using multiple software programs for report preparation and documentation.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must meet and maintain physical requirements as set by Campus Safety and Security.
  • Ability to remain on feet for extended periods, as well as perform physical tasks such as lifting and running.
  • Must withstand exposure to various weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in security or a related field; additional education may substitute for experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of relevant law enforcement or military experience.
  • Some college education or an associate degree is advantageous.
