Role Summary:

We are in search of enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Campus Safety Officers. These officers will work collaboratively, embodying integrity, professionalism, and compassion to safeguard the lives and property of the Johns Hopkins community. Officers will engage regularly with students, faculty, staff, and visitors, offering essential services and information.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver community-oriented law enforcement services, including patrols and crime prevention initiatives.
  • Support student and staff initiatives while fostering positive relationships with the university community and surrounding neighborhoods.
  • Enforce university policies, state laws, and regulations in partnership with other university personnel.
  • Lead with a focus on modern policing practices to enhance public trust.
  • Work under the supervision of a Sergeant, adhering to shift work and rotating days off.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Representing the vision and values of the JHPD while engaging with community members and advocacy groups.
  • Performing law enforcement duties, including enforcing safety regulations and conducting problem-solving initiatives.
  • Patrolling designated areas to identify safety hazards and report violations.
  • Maintaining a visible presence to build relationships with community stakeholders.
  • Responding to emergencies and calls for assistance, employing de-escalation techniques as necessary.
  • Coordinating with Campus Safety and Security for investigations of reported incidents.
  • Providing public safety information and participating in community safety programs.
  • Conducting or assisting with evidence collection and preparing cases for court.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Conditions of Employment:

Successful candidates will complete a training academy and maintain certification as mandated by the Maryland Police Training Commission. Candidates may be subject to pre-employment drug testing and will serve a probationary period.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Knowledge of contemporary law enforcement practices.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws and policies.
  • Capacity to work effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties, including operating law enforcement equipment.

This position involves both indoor and outdoor work, requiring physical stamina and the ability to respond to emergencies in various weather conditions. The role may require working weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
