This role is designated for the evening shift from 3 PM to 11 PM. We are in search of a Campus Security Officer who will deliver protective services to the Homewood Campus and associated off-campus locations and events. The officer will serve as a primary responder to manage any critical incidents or situations affecting their designated area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct uniformed patrols and implement crime deterrence strategies to safeguard individuals and property.
  • Provide proactive assistance to student and staff initiatives, fostering a positive relationship with students, faculty, staff, and local community members.
  • Collaborate with various University officials in the initial and follow-up investigation of reported issues.
  • Document criminal activities and disturbances, enforce University regulations, state laws, and local ordinances.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare detailed reports as required.
  • This position requires shift work and rotating days off, with daily supervision by the Campus Safety and Security Shift Commander.

Note: This is a non-sworn, unarmed position within the current security framework. Shift assignments will be based on departmental needs following the completion of training.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Patrol designated areas using foot, bicycle, Segway Human Transporters, T-3 Patrol Vehicles, or other assigned vehicles, actively engaging in crime prevention and community policing efforts.
  • Respond to routine and emergency service calls, taking appropriate action to support the on-duty shift.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations while maintaining confidentiality and writing clear, concise reports.
  • Direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic as necessary, providing escorts and other general services to assist the on-duty shift.
  • Work flexible shifts, including weekends and holidays, to accommodate operational and special event needs.
  • Utilize various computers and equipment as part of routine job functions.
  • Perform additional security-related services for faculty, staff, students, and visitors as required.
  • Ensure security for the University’s on-campus and off-campus properties, facilities, and activities.

Requirements:

  • Must be eligible to obtain certification as a Special Police Officer by the State of Maryland, complying with the Scope of Commission per MD Public Safety Article Section.
  • Successful completion of a University criminal background check is mandatory.
  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license with a clean driving record (no more than two current points).
  • Completion of a physical/health screening examination, including drug testing, and meeting Campus Safety and Security physical standards.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Ability to operate various machines and equipment, including vehicles, office equipment, and communication devices.
  • Capability to become certified in operating Segways, T-3s, bicycles, or other assigned equipment.
  • Training and certification to carry and use defensive tools when necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with University students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions, maintaining professionalism in all situations.
  • Capacity to work independently and document observations accurately.
  • Ability to analyze and respond to stressful situations appropriately.
  • Collaborative interaction with the general public, students, staff, and faculty is essential.
  • Willingness to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as needed.
  • Preparedness to respond to and manage high-risk incidents or events impacting the University community.
  • Collaboration with University mental health professionals during stressful situations involving personnel.
  • Proficiency in using multiple software programs for report preparation and documentation.

Physical Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a physical/health screening examination, including drug testing, is required.
  • Physical demands exceed those of sedentary work; officers must be able to remain on their feet for extended periods and perform various physical tasks.
  • Ability to operate a range of machines and equipment, including vehicles and office equipment.
  • Capability to pursue offenders, restrain aggressive individuals, and make arrests when necessary.
  • Ability to run moderate distances and navigate stairs; comprehend University policies and procedures.
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions.
  • Must maintain certification and proficiency with all defensive tools and issued equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in security or a related field.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience as permitted by the University’s equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of related law enforcement or military experience.
  • Some college education or an associate degree.
