Position Overview

UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a Medical Lab Technician or Laboratory Support Technician to contribute to the Automated Testing Lab (ATL). This role involves working night shifts from 11:15 p.m. to 7:15 a.m., including rotating weekends and holidays.

Compensation: Salary for the Laboratory Support Technician position begins at $17.78/hour, with placement in the appropriate title and salary based on individual qualifications and experience.

Sign-on Bonus: UPMC is offering a sign-on bonus for qualified MLT candidates:

  • $7,000 for a 2-year commitment
  • $10,000 for a 3-year commitment


Key Responsibilities:

  • Comply with all laboratory and hospital protocols, procedures, quality assurance measures, and personnel policies.
  • Execute established protocols for specimen collection (including phlebotomy as necessary) and processing, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses according to defined procedures with precision and timeliness.
  • Identify critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results, following up as per established guidelines. Recognize factors influencing measurements and initiate corrective actions as needed.
  • Diagnose issues with instruments, methodologies, specimens, supplies, or results, taking appropriate actions as outlined in protocols.
  • Process specimens for analysis, accurately entering patient demographic data and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system while ensuring sample integrity.
  • Independently perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests (qualitative and quantitative), with High Complexity testing conducted under the supervision of a Medical Lab Scientist or Manager.
  • Adhere to established testing protocols, ensuring precision and timeliness. Recognize and act on critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results.
  • Perform and document Quality Control in accordance with established protocols, informing supervisory personnel of any unusual incidents.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment as per training, performing quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs as necessary.
  • Manage and maintain inventory of supplies for the functions under responsibility, using materials cost-effectively.
  • Exhibit dependability, reliability, and sound judgment, prioritizing departmental needs and accepting appropriate authority.
  • Follow all safety guidelines related to biohazards, chemicals, and sharps, ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Assist in training and orienting new staff, students, and residents according to established competency and operational guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • Medical Lab Technician: Associate's degree in laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), OR
  • Bachelor's degree in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience, OR
  • Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
  • Preferred: Minimum of 1 year of experience in a hospital laboratory and familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems.

  • Laboratory Support Technician: High School diploma or equivalent with at least 2 years of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Associate degree (with biology and chemistry courses) and at least 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification with 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course, OR
  • B.S. degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological or clinical laboratory science, OR
  • Currently enrolled in an MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent training program, with 3 years of college credits required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred. New York license required for NY locations.
