Position Overview

UPMC - Pittsburgh Medical Center is seeking a dedicated Clinical Laboratory Specialist or Clinical Laboratory Technician to join our Automated Testing Laboratory. This position involves a consistent night shift schedule (8-hour shifts), including rotating weekends and holidays.

We are pleased to offer a night shift incentive program, where participants will earn an additional $2.00 per hour on top of their off-shift differential for committing to steady night shifts. Participants are expected to fulfill their maximum employment status (part-time or full-time) during night shift hours.

Compensation: Salary for the Clinical Laboratory Technician begins at $20.88/hour, with placement into the appropriate job title and salary based on individual experience and education.

Sign-On Bonus Information:

For Clinical Laboratory Technicians:

  • $7,000 for a 2-year commitment
  • $10,000 for a 3-year commitment

For Clinical Laboratory Specialists:

  • $10,000 for a 2-year commitment
  • $15,000 for a 3-year commitment


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct, oversee, or assist in the development of tests and evaluation of methodologies/equipment.
  • Identify critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results, following established protocols for follow-up. Recognize factors influencing measurements and results, initiating corrective actions as necessary.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to training, performing quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Execute minor repairs and manage reagent and supply inventory effectively.
  • Provide training and orientation for new staff, students, and residents as assigned.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments, along with their interrelationships and physiological conditions affecting test outcomes.
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies regarding procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance, and personnel policies. Follow established protocols for specimen collection (including phlebotomy, as required) and processing for analysis.
  • Assume temporary first-line supervisory responsibilities for the section/department as delegated.
  • Perform High Complexity Testing (as defined by PA DOH) independently.

Qualifications for Clinical Laboratory Specialist:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program, OR
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification, OR
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years of experience in a role equivalent to that of a Clinical Laboratory Technician in a clinical setting, OR
  • Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 and PA Bureau of Laboratories for technologists performing high complexity testing.
  • Preferred: 1-year experience in a hospital laboratory; knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems.

Qualifications for Clinical Laboratory Technician:

  • Associate Degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as either a Clinical Laboratory Technician, or as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant, OR;
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, OR;
  • Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
  • Completion of an MLT program is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems is preferred.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Medical Technologist MT(ASCP), Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS(ASCP), or equivalent certification is preferred.
  • Act 34 clearance.
