UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Laboratory Services Specialist to assist in the Automated Testing Lab (ATL). This role involves working night shifts from 11:15 p.m. to 7:15 a.m., including rotating weekends and holidays.
The Automated Testing Lab is a cutting-edge facility where your contributions can significantly impact medical advancements. This environment promotes a positive workplace culture, abundant natural light, a collaborative team, and numerous opportunities for professional development and recognition.
Compensation is based on individual experience and education, with the starting salary for the Laboratory Services Specialist at $17.78/hour.
Sign-on Bonus Available for Qualified Candidates:
- $7,000 for a 2-year commitment
- $10,000 for a 3-year commitment
Key Responsibilities:
- Comply with all laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, quality assurance, and proficiency testing standards.
- Follow established protocols for specimen collection (including phlebotomy as necessary) and processing, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability.
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses according to established methods with precision and efficiency.
- Identify critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results, taking appropriate follow-up actions as per established guidelines.
- Diagnose issues with instrumentation, methodologies, specimens, or results, and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Process specimens for analysis, ensuring accurate entry of patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system.
- Independently perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests; High Complexity testing requires oversight from a Medical Lab Scientist or review by a Supervisor or Manager.
- Adhere to established testing protocols, ensuring precision and accuracy in a timely manner.
- Document Quality Control activities according to established protocols and report any unusual incidents to supervisory personnel.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, performing quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs as needed.
- Monitor and manage supplies effectively, ensuring cost-efficient use of materials and reagents.
- Exhibit dependability and independent judgment, prioritizing tasks to meet departmental needs.
- Adhere to biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety protocols to maintain a safe working environment.
- Assist in training and orienting new staff, students, and residents according to established competency guidelines.
Qualifications for Medical Lab Technician:
- Associate's degree in laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), OR
- Bachelor of Science degree in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience, OR
- Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
- Preferred: Minimum of 1 year of experience in a hospital laboratory and familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems.
Qualifications for Laboratory Services Specialist:
- High School diploma or equivalent, with at least 2 years of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
- Associate degree (with biology and chemistry courses) and at least 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
- Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification with 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
- Successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course, OR
- B.S. degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological or clinical laboratory science, OR
- Currently enrolled in an MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent training program, with 3 years of college credits required.
Licensure and Certifications:
Preferred certifications include Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA). A New York license is required for positions in New York locations.
