Position Overview

UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a Medical Lab Technician or Laboratory Support Technician to contribute to the Automated Testing Lab (ATL). This role requires individuals who are available to work night shifts from 11:15 p.m. to 7:15 a.m., including rotating weekends and holidays.

Compensation will be determined based on individual qualifications and experience. The starting salary for the Laboratory Support Technician position is $17.78/hour.

Sign-on Bonus for MLT qualified candidates:

  • $7,000 for a 2-year commitment
  • $10,000 for a 3-year commitment


Key Responsibilities:

  • Comply with all laboratory and hospital protocols, procedures, quality assurance standards, and personnel policies.
  • Follow established protocols for specimen collection (including phlebotomy when necessary) and processing, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analytical tests according to set guidelines with precision and efficiency.
  • Identify critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results, following up as per established procedures. Recognize factors that may influence measurements and initiate corrective actions as needed.
  • Diagnose issues with instruments, methodologies, specimens, supplies, or results, taking action as outlined in predetermined protocols.
  • Process specimens for analysis, accurately entering patient demographic data and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system while ensuring the integrity of patient information and samples.
  • Independently perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests (qualitative and quantitative). High Complexity testing is conducted under the supervision of a Medical Lab Scientist or reviewed by a Supervisor or Manager.
  • Adhere to established testing protocols for precision and accuracy in a timely manner. Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow up as necessary.
  • Conduct and document Quality Control in accordance with established protocols, informing supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual occurrences.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment within the scope of training, performing quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration as per defined schedules and written instructions. Execute minor repairs as needed and manage reagent and supply usage effectively.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies relevant to the responsibilities of the position, ensuring cost-effective use of materials and reagents.
  • Exhibit dependability, reliability, and sound judgment. Prioritize tasks to meet departmental needs and accept appropriate authority.
  • Adhere to all biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety protocols, maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Assist in training and orienting new staff, students, and residents, following established competency and operational guidelines.

Qualifications for Medical Lab Technician:

  • Associate's degree in laboratory science with certification (or eligibility as a new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), OR
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience, OR
  • Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
  • Preferred: Minimum of 1 year of experience in a hospital laboratory. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems is advantageous.

Qualifications for Laboratory Support Technician:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, with at least 2 years of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Associate degree (with biology and chemistry coursework) and at least 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification and 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course, OR
  • B.S. degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological or clinical laboratory science, OR
  • Currently enrolled in an MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent training program, with 3 years of college credits required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred. New York license required for NY locations.
