UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a Medical Lab Technician or Laboratory Support Technician to contribute to the Automated Testing Lab (ATL). We are looking for candidates who are willing to work night shifts from 11:15 p.m. to 7:15 a.m., including rotating weekends and holidays.

Compensation: Applicants will be assigned to the appropriate job title and salary based on their qualifications and experience. The starting salary for the Laboratory Support Technician position is $17.78/hour.

UPMC is pleased to offer a Sign-on Bonus for qualified MLT candidates:

  • $7,000 for a 2-year commitment
  • $10,000 for a 3-year commitment


Key Responsibilities:

  • Comply with all established laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, methods, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and personnel policies.
  • Follow established protocols for specimen collection (including phlebotomy, as necessary) and processing for analysis, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures in accordance with established protocols, ensuring precision and accuracy in a timely manner.
  • Identify critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results, taking appropriate follow-up actions as per established protocols. Recognize factors influencing measurements and results, initiating corrective actions as needed.
  • Diagnose issues with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results, and take action according to predetermined protocols.
  • Process specimens for analysis, accurately entering patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system while ensuring the integrity of patient information and samples.
  • Independently perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests (qualitative and quantitative). High Complexity testing is conducted only under the supervision of a Medical Lab Scientist or with result review by a Supervisor or Manager.
  • Meet established testing protocols for precision and accuracy in a timely manner, recognizing critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and following up as per established protocols.
  • Perform and document Quality Control in accordance with established protocols, notifying supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
  • Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training, adhering to defined schedules and written instructions for quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Perform minor repairs and manage reagent and supply usage effectively.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for the functions associated with the position, ensuring cost-effective use of materials and reagents.
  • Exhibit dependability, reliability, and independent judgment, recognizing priorities to meet departmental needs and accepting appropriate authority.
  • Adhere to all biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety guidelines, maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Assist in training and orienting new employees, students, and residents, following established competency and workstation operational guidelines.

Qualifications for Medical Lab Technician:

  • Associate's degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), OR
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience, OR
  • Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
  • Preferred: Minimum of 1 year’s experience in a hospital laboratory and familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems.

Qualifications for Laboratory Support Technician:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, with at least 2 years of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Associate degree (with biology and chemistry courses) and at least 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification with 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course, OR
  • B.S. degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological or clinical laboratory science, OR
  • Currently enrolled in an MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent training program, with 3 years of college credits required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred. New York license required for NY locations.
