Position Overview

UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a Medical Lab Technician or Laboratory Support Technician to assist in the operations of the Automated Testing Lab (ATL). We are looking for dedicated professionals who are available to work night shifts from 11:15 p.m. to 7:15 a.m., including rotating weekends and holidays.

Compensation: Salary for the Laboratory Support Technician position begins at $17.78/hour, with placement into the appropriate job title and salary based on individual qualifications and experience.

Sign-on Bonus: UPMC is offering a sign-on bonus for qualified MLT candidates:

  • $7,000 for a 2-year commitment
  • $10,000 for a 3-year commitment


Key Responsibilities:

  • Comply with all laboratory and hospital protocols, procedures, quality assurance standards, and personnel policies.
  • Execute established protocols for specimen collection (including phlebotomy as necessary) and processing, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analytical tests according to set guidelines with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Identify critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results, taking appropriate follow-up actions as per established procedures.
  • Diagnose issues with instruments, methodologies, specimens, supplies, or results, and take corrective actions as outlined in predefined protocols.
  • Process specimens for analysis, accurately entering patient demographic data and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system while ensuring sample integrity.
  • Independently perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests, with High Complexity testing conducted under the supervision of a Medical Lab Scientist or a Supervisor/Manager.
  • Adhere to established testing protocols for precision and accuracy, recognizing critical results and following up as required.
  • Perform and document Quality Control in accordance with established protocols, alerting supervisory personnel of any unusual incidents.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to training, performing quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs as needed.
  • Monitor and manage inventory of supplies, utilizing materials and reagents efficiently.
  • Exhibit reliability, independent judgment, and the ability to prioritize tasks to meet departmental needs.
  • Follow safety guidelines for biohazard, chemicals, and sharps, ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Assist in training and orienting new staff, students, and residents, adhering to established competency and operational guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • Medical Lab Technician: Associate's degree in laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), OR
  • Bachelor's degree in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science with at least 6 months of clinical laboratory experience, OR
  • Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
  • Preferred: Minimum of 1 year of experience in a hospital laboratory, with familiarity in medical terminology and laboratory information systems.

  • Laboratory Support Technician: High School diploma or equivalent, with at least 2 years of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Associate degree (with biology and chemistry coursework) and at least 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification with 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course, OR
  • B.S. degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological or clinical laboratory science, OR
  • Currently enrolled in an MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent training program, with at least 3 years of college credits required.

Licensure and Certifications: Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred. New York license required for specific locations.
