UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a Medical Lab Technician or Laboratory Support Technician to assist in the Automated Testing Lab (ATL). We are looking for dedicated individuals willing to work night shifts from 11:15 p.m. to 7:15 a.m., including rotating weekends and holidays.

The Automated Testing Lab is a cutting-edge facility where you can contribute to transformative healthcare. This environment promotes a positive atmosphere with ample natural light, a diverse team collaborating closely, and numerous opportunities for professional development and recognition.

Compensation: Salary for the Laboratory Support Technician position begins at $17.78/hour, with placement into the appropriate title and salary based on individual qualifications and experience.

Sign-on Bonus: UPMC is offering a sign-on bonus for qualified MLT candidates:

  • $7,000 for a 2-year commitment
  • $10,000 for a 3-year commitment


Key Responsibilities:

  • Comply with all established laboratory and hospital protocols, procedures, and quality assurance standards.
  • Follow specified procedures for specimen collection (including phlebotomy as needed) and processing, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analytical tests in accordance with established protocols, ensuring precision and accuracy.
  • Identify critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results, following up as per established guidelines.
  • Detect issues with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, or results, taking appropriate actions as outlined in protocols.
  • Process specimens for analysis, accurately entering patient demographic data and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system.
  • Independently perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests; High Complexity testing requires oversight from a Medical Lab Scientist or supervisor.
  • Adhere to established testing protocols, ensuring timely and accurate results.
  • Perform and document Quality Control as per established protocols, notifying supervisory personnel of any unusual incidents.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, performing quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs as necessary.
  • Monitor and maintain supply inventory for the functions under your responsibility.
  • Exhibit dependability and independent judgment, prioritizing department needs effectively.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines related to biohazards, chemicals, and sharps, maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Assist in training and orienting new employees, students, and residents, following established competency guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • Medical Lab Technician: Associate's degree in laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution, OR
  • Bachelor's degree in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience, OR
  • Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
  • Preferred: Minimum of 1 year’s experience in a hospital laboratory and familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems.

  • Laboratory Support Technician: High School diploma or equivalent with at least 2 years of experience as a Specimen Processor in a clinical lab, OR
  • Associate degree (with biology and chemistry courses) and at least 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor, OR
  • Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification with 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor, OR
  • Completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course, OR
  • B.S. degree in biological or clinical laboratory science, OR
  • Currently enrolled in an MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) program with 3 years of college credits required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred. New York license required for specific locations.
