Clinical Laboratory Specialist, Part-time Daylight

UPMC Life Changing Medicine is seeking a part-time Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician to support the Special Tissue Typing Laboratory. We are looking for individuals who are interested in working daylight hours, Monday through Friday (20 hours per week), with rotating on-call responsibilities.
While working in our laboratory, you will have the opportunity to complete on-the-job training, including the chance to certify in ACHI (American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics).
Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Medical Laboratory Scientist's salary starts at $25.74/hour.
Key Responsibilities:
- Meet established testing protocols for precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner. Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow up according to established protocols.
- Independently perform moderately complex or waived tests (qualitative and quantitative). Perform high complexity testing only with the oversight of a Medical Technologist or with result review by a Supervisor or Manager.
- Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment. Recognize priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
- Perform and document quality control according to established protocols. Inform supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
- Assist with the training and orienting of new employees, students, and residents, using established competency and workstation operational guidelines.
- Monitor and maintain supplies for those functions for which the position is responsible; cost-effectively use materials and reagents.
- Process specimens for analysis. Enter accurate patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information as well as sample integrity.
- Honor confidentiality of patient information. Follow all compliance guidelines.
- Follow all biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety guidelines. Maintain a safe work environment.
- Maintain instruments following procedural calibrations, quality control, and daily maintenance and troubleshooting when necessary.
Requirements:
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.
- Associate degree in a laboratory science or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
- Minimum 1 year's experience in a hospital laboratory preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems is preferred.
Medical Laboratory Scientist Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university and successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program, or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 and PA Bureau of Laboratories for technologists performing high complexity testing.
- Prefer 1-year experience in a hospital laboratory. Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.
