Clinical Laboratory Technician

UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Laboratory Services Technician to assist in the Automated Testing Lab (ATL). This role requires individuals who are available for night shifts from 11:15 p.m. to 7:15 a.m., including rotating weekends and holidays.
The Automated Testing Lab is a cutting-edge facility where your contributions can significantly impact transformative healthcare. The lab promotes a supportive work atmosphere with ample natural light, a diverse team that collaborates closely, and numerous opportunities for professional development and acknowledgment.
Compensation for the Laboratory Services Technician position begins at $17.78/hour, with placement in the appropriate title and salary based on individual qualifications and experience.
UPMC is pleased to offer a Sign-on Bonus for qualified MLT candidates:
- $7,000 for a 2-year commitment
- $10,000 for a 3-year commitment
Key Responsibilities:
- Comply with all established laboratory and hospital protocols, procedures, quality assurance standards, and personnel policies.
- Adhere to established protocols for specimen collection (including phlebotomy when necessary) and processing, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability.
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures in accordance with established guidelines, ensuring precision and efficiency.
- Identify critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results, following established protocols for follow-up actions. Recognize factors influencing measurements and results, initiating corrective actions as needed.
- Diagnose issues with instrumentation, methodologies, specimens, supplies, or results, taking action as outlined in predetermined protocols.
- Process specimens for analysis, accurately entering patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system while ensuring sample integrity.
- Independently perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests (qualitative and quantitative). High Complexity testing is conducted under the supervision of a Medical Lab Scientist or with review by a Supervisor or Manager.
- Meet established testing protocols for precision and accuracy in a timely manner, recognizing critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and following up as required.
- Perform and document Quality Control in accordance with established protocols, informing supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual incidents.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment within the scope of training, performing quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration as needed. Conduct minor repairs and manage reagent and supply inventory effectively.
- Ensure adequate supplies for assigned functions, utilizing materials and reagents efficiently.
- Exhibit dependability, reliability, and sound judgment, prioritizing tasks to meet departmental needs.
- Adhere to all biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety protocols, maintaining a safe working environment.
- Assist in training and orienting new employees, students, and residents, following established competency and operational guidelines.
Qualifications for Medical Lab Technician:
- Associate's degree in laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), OR
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, along with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience, OR
- Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
- Preferred: Minimum of 1 year’s experience in a hospital laboratory and familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems.
Qualifications for Laboratory Support Technician:
- High School diploma or equivalent, with at least 2 years of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
- Associate degree (with biology and chemistry courses) and at least 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
- Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification with 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
- Successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course, OR
- B.S. degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological or clinical laboratory science, OR
- Currently enrolled in an MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent training program, with 3 years of college credits required.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred. New York license required for NY locations.
