Job Overview

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) is on the lookout for a skilled media relations expert to enhance our dynamic Communications team as a Media Relations Officer. This pivotal role will ensure that MassCEC's goals and successes are effectively conveyed to the media and the public through clear and impactful messaging.

Position Type: Full-time

Compensation: $70,000 - $78,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.

Benefits Include: 457b retirement plan with matching contributions; comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage; life insurance; generous paid time off; parental leave; tuition reimbursement; monthly remote work stipend; supplemental retirement plan, among others.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, with occasional off-hours work as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle regular media inquiries regarding MassCEC's initiatives and relevant topics.
  • Conduct research to develop talking points for media responses.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with journalists, reporters, and selected social media influencers.
  • Draft media statements on behalf of MassCEC staff and leadership.
  • Assist in creating and disseminating press releases and other media materials.
  • Coordinate interviews between MassCEC personnel and media representatives.
  • Maintain collaborative partnerships with other state agencies.
  • Monitor, compile, and evaluate media coverage.
  • Manage the agency's press distribution list.
  • Compile and distribute daily and weekly press summaries to staff.
  • Work with the social media team to enhance media coverage visibility.
  • Support the Marketing and Communications team on various projects and public events as needed.
  • Some travel and participation in evening and weekend events may be required.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related discipline.

Experience:

  • 2-4 years of experience in media relations and communications, ideally within clean energy, economic development, emerging technologies, or journalism.
  • Experience in a governmental setting is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • A proactive team player with a proven ability to simplify complex information for general audiences.
  • Professional demeanor with the capacity to build and maintain effective working relationships across various programs.
  • Ability to assist staff in external roles to effectively communicate the organization's messaging.
  • Capability to promote a cohesive branding strategy for MassCEC across all platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, troubleshoot issues, and propose solutions.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring high-quality written outputs.
  • Proficient in internet-based research and familiar with Microsoft Office applications.
