As a vital member of our enthusiastic team, you will contribute to shaping the communication initiatives that amplify our mission to combat poverty. The Media Relations Specialist will play a crucial role in enhancing the visibility of our organization through effective press strategies, collaborating closely with the Senior Director of Communications to secure impactful media coverage.

Key Responsibilities of the Media Relations Specialist

  • Develop and execute comprehensive annual media outreach plans, identifying proactive and reactive pitching opportunities and communication priorities.
  • Oversee daily media relations activities, including proactive outreach to both national and local media, cultivating relationships with journalists covering relevant topics, and monitoring media coverage to stay informed on industry trends.
  • Draft and secure placements for opinion pieces and letters to the editor in various media outlets.
  • Create and finalize essential media documents such as press releases, statements, advisories, and talking points.
  • Prepare organizational representatives for media interviews, ensuring they are well-equipped to convey our message effectively.
  • Manage our storytelling initiative, collaborating with program participants to ethically share their experiences in the media.
  • Support additional communication efforts, including:
    • Writing blog articles based on interviews and research to produce original content.
    • Updating our public website to reflect the latest developments and communicate our mission effectively.
    • Designing marketing materials that adhere to our branding standards and effectively convey our message.
    • Contributing to the overall communications strategy and calendar.
    • Collaborating with the Institutional Advancement team to assist with fundraising events and other departmental needs.

Qualifications and Skills

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience is required.
  • At least three years of experience in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field; experience in the nonprofit sector is highly valued.
  • Proven success in securing media placements that align with strategic communication objectives; strong relationships with journalists; a keen interest in current events and media trends.
  • Exceptional writing abilities, with a talent for identifying and narrating compelling stories.
  • Basic proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign; capable of creating or updating design files with a strong eye for aesthetics.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • A collaborative mindset, fostering positive working relationships with a diverse team.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills, demonstrating an entrepreneurial spirit to drive initiatives forward.
