Position Title: Accountant

Salary: $83, $103,459.20 Annually

Classification Overview:

Under supervision, the Accountant is responsible for a range of professional accounting tasks, including the preparation, maintenance, analysis, verification, and reconciliation of intricate financial transactions, statements, records, and reports. This role also involves the coordination and oversight of various accounting functions, aiding in the annual audit process and year-end closing activities, while providing essential support to management.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct a variety of advanced accounting functions that support city-wide operations, ensuring the accuracy of general and specialized ledgers.
  2. Oversee the auditing of payable vouchers and verify the accuracy of accounts payable, including proper coding and discounts.
  3. Manage the billing, recording, and monthly reconciliation of accounts receivable, along with follow-up on overdue accounts.
  4. Assist in the posting, balancing, and reconciliation of the general ledger and subsidiary accounts, including monthly and year-end financial closings.
  5. Review payroll adjustments, contracts, and other financial documents for accuracy and compliance.
  6. Prepare various financial, statistical, and special reports, contributing to the comprehensive annual financial report.
  7. Evaluate accounting and internal control procedures across departments and recommend necessary modifications.
  8. Prepare documentation for review and adoption by the City Council and other agencies.
  9. Participate in the development and maintenance of specialized accounting information systems.
  10. Support independent auditors as needed and record journal entries for various financial activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, candidates should possess a Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field, along with two years of progressively responsible experience in governmental accounting.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Understanding of public agency financial management principles, including accounting, auditing, and reporting.
  • Proficiency in analyzing general ledgers and preparing journal entries.
  • Familiarity with financial record-keeping and reporting practices.
  • Ability to prepare and interpret financial reports and statements.
  • Strong mathematical skills and knowledge of supervisory principles.
  • Competence in using office equipment and accounting software.

Work Environment:

This role is primarily office-based, requiring the ability to perform tasks that involve prolonged periods of sitting or standing, as well as occasional physical activities such as lifting and operating office equipment.
