Reno, Nevada, United States Washoe County School District Full time

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under supervision, the incumbent will execute a comprehensive range of bookkeeping and paraprofessional accounting responsibilities, focusing on the preparation, upkeep, and evaluation of financial and statistical documentation and reports. This role may involve leading a small team of subordinate clerical staff or account clerks. The incumbent will also engage in related tasks as necessary.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS

This position represents the advanced journey level within the clerical accounting series, functioning as a full-charge bookkeeper. Roles in this category handle the most intricate and challenging financial and statistical records, necessitating creativity, initiative, independent judgment, and a thorough understanding of departmental record-keeping protocols.

The Senior Accounting Services Specialist is distinguished from the Account Clerk II role by the heightened consequences of errors, the technical complexity of assignments, and the requirement for a deeper knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping principles.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Collects and interprets data for budget formulation; conducts research and compiles background information to support management decisions; prepares regular and special reports mandated by regulatory bodies; develops schedules for auditors; and creates complex statistical and accounting reports from diverse sources.

- Oversees and actively participates in maintaining records across various accounting systems related to personnel, salaries, inventory, fund allocations, expenditures, accounts payable, and receivable, as well as purchasing activities; executes complex journal entries for fund reallocations and administrative adjustments; reconciles accounts; and prepares periodic transaction summaries, including trial balances and financial statements.

- May take charge of financial office support functions in a specific area, such as payroll, or across an entire department or program; supervises technical or functional tasks within the assigned area; assists district personnel and the public by addressing inquiries that involve searching for and summarizing financial and statistical data while explaining relevant policies and procedures; instructs staff on the proper interpretation and application of applicable laws, regulations, and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: A combination of education and experience that is likely to provide the necessary knowledge and skills is acceptable. A typical path to acquiring the knowledge and skills includes:

  • Education: Equivalent to a two-year degree from an accredited institution with a focus on bookkeeping, accounting, or a related discipline;

AND

Experience: Three years of experience comparable to that of an Account Clerk II within the Washoe County School District, including at least one year of experience in preparing financial statements.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

- Understanding of fundamental accounting principles, procedures, and terminology; governmental accounting and budgeting practices; computerized accounting systems; relevant laws and regulations governing financial record maintenance; business mathematics; and methods for researching, evaluating, and organizing data.

- Proficiency in performing paraprofessional accounting duties and full-charge bookkeeping tasks with minimal oversight; coordinating and supervising the work of account maintenance clerks; verifying, compiling, reconciling, and interpreting data; preparing narrative and statistical reports from various sources; identifying and rectifying discrepancies in financial documents; operating standard office equipment and accounting software; performing rapid and accurate mathematical computations; and effectively following oral and written instructions while fostering positive working relationships.

NOTE: This job specification should not be interpreted as an exhaustive list of requirements. Incumbents may be required to follow additional instructions and perform related duties as assigned by their supervisor.
