The Commercial Package Underwriting Manager plays a crucial role in delivering technical expertise and program management skills to enhance operational efficiency, drive production, and ensure adherence to policies within the Commercial Package Line of Business, which encompasses property, general liability, inland marine, auto, and umbrella/excess. This position will oversee the technology and systems that facilitate underwriting activities, ultimately contributing to the growth of this line of business.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Enhances the strategy and growth of the Commercial Package Underwriting Line of Business by providing insights and guidance to leadership.

  • Contributes to the formulation and adjustment of departmental goals, plans, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Maintains a sales-oriented culture that consistently delivers on brand and product value propositions through reporting, training, and production monitoring.
  • Collaborates with Branch Managers to train and develop Branch Team Members.
  • Acts as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and partners with technology teams on system developments, including underwriting management and policy administration systems.
  • Identifies, monitors, and reports critical system issues.
Serves as the SME in underwriting for internal stakeholders, insureds, agents, and customers.
  • Facilitates and conducts audits of Branch underwriting to assess the quality of the business portfolio.
  • Communicates timely updates to relevant department partners regarding industry, legal, and financial changes, including ISO/DOI rulings, forms, coverage modifications, competition, policy issuance, and state filings.
  • Provides expertise in workflow for applications and automation.
Manages programs that drive profitability and initiatives within the line of business.
  • Develops and/or facilitates new products, programs, or offerings.
  • Establishes key performance indicators for new markets and/or enhances sales.
  • Reviews and evaluates the underwriting portfolio to assess progress toward business objectives.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities but may mentor and/or train junior team members.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years of relevant experience in commercial property, general liability, inland marine, auto, and umbrella/excess underwriting, with a preference for 5 years.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Statistics, or a related field is required; additional experience may substitute for the degree.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
  • In-depth knowledge of commercial property, general liability, inland marine, auto, and umbrella/excess coverage.
  • Understanding of automated workflows.
  • Strong grasp of insurance underwriting concepts and principles.
  • Ability to cultivate strong business relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Critical thinking abilities, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong public and internal communication skills; proficiency in insurance systems and customer relationship management systems.
