Position Overview

The Postdoctoral Research Associate role is pivotal in advancing integrated research and outreach initiatives focused on food safety protocols, particularly emphasizing good manufacturing practices (GMP) and Preventive Controls for Human Food.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory-based research aimed at identifying optimal practices for food processing applications.
  • Utilize expertise in bacteriological techniques to formulate studies that evaluate risks and develop strategies to enhance food safety measures.
  • Create, oversee, and disseminate educational materials to provide technical assistance to food processors, including training sessions, written resources, and various adult learning tools.
  • Collaborate with and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in executing integrated extension research within the Kinchla group.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Foster a collaborative and effective work environment that promotes teamwork, diversity, equity, and inclusivity.
  • Engage with colleagues across the College of Natural Sciences and the broader campus community to align with the Dean's strategic objectives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in Food Science or a related discipline must be completed prior to the commencement of the position.
  • A valid U.S. driver's license is required.
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Capacity to educate and engage in public outreach.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in extension services or public engagement.
  • Familiarity with industrial applications of food science.
  • Training in food safety management systems such as Preventive Controls for Human Food, Seafood HACCP, Juice HACCP, or Meat & Poultry HACCP.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in a laboratory setting with pathogenic microorganisms.

Work Environment

  • This position requires in-person attendance at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Campus.
  • Work hours are typically Monday through Friday, with flexibility to accommodate scientific research and outreach programming.

Compensation

  • Annual Salary: $52,024.00.
