Position Overview:

Amherst College is seeking applications for the role of Casual Catering Assistant. This is a part-time, flexible position that offers an hourly wage starting at $18.00. The ideal candidate will contribute positively to a diverse community and demonstrate their commitment to fostering an inclusive environment.

The Casual Catering Assistant plays a vital role in the Catering Department, ensuring exceptional service during campus events. This position involves actions that promote a diverse workforce and supports the College's mission to create a respectful and welcoming atmosphere.

The successful candidate will prioritize quality and outstanding customer service. Responsibilities include assisting the catering team with preparation, delivery, setup, service, and breakdown of events. This role ensures that all food items, serving utensils, and menu signage are prepared for service while maintaining safe and sanitary conditions. The assistant will work collaboratively with team members to meet and exceed customer expectations.

The work schedule is variable and aligns with the operational needs of the College, which may include morning and evening shifts. Given the nature of the work, a flexible schedule is essential, and the position may require reporting to work during College closures.

Key Responsibilities:

Catering Events:

  • Collaborate with the catering team to prepare, organize, transport, and deliver food, beverages, and supplies; ensure effective setup and breakdown.
  • Operate dishwashing equipment and perform manual dishwashing as necessary during events.
  • Maintain cleanliness by sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing kitchen and storage areas.
  • Vacuum carpeted areas in catering spaces.
Storage and Organization:
  • Ensure the organization and sanitation of catering supplies and equipment.
  • Perform various cleaning and organizational tasks as assigned.
Communication and Administrative Duties:
  • Regularly check communications to stay informed about departmental updates and events.
  • Utilize management systems to track work hours, time-off requests, and personal information.
Qualifications:

Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Relevant work experience may substitute for educational requirements.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary for operating College vehicles.
  • Pre-employment physical/lift test.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, customer service, and time management skills.
  • Commitment to working within a diverse and inclusive community.
Preferred:
  • Experience driving cargo vans.
  • Two years of experience in food service.
  • Background in catering services.
