Position Overview:
Amherst College is seeking candidates for the Museum Safety Coordinator role. This is a part-time, casual position offering a starting wage of $18/hour without benefits. The ideal candidate will contribute positively to a diverse community and support the college's mission of inclusivity.
Key Responsibilities:
Security Oversight:
Maintain a secure atmosphere within the Amherst College Museums (including the Beneski Museum of Natural History, Mead Art Museum & Russian Cultural Center). Provide outstanding customer service while representing the museums and the institution. Conduct regular inspections of public areas, staff zones, collection storage, mechanical spaces, and museum exteriors. Ensure adherence to departmental policies and procedures at all times.

Work Schedule:
Due to the nature of the role, evening and weekend availability is essential. The schedule may include:
- Thursdays 4:15 pm - 10:15 pm (Mead Art - Academic year only)
- Saturday / Sunday: 8:30 am - 5:15 pm (Mead Art or Beneski Natural History)
- Tuesday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:15 pm (Mead Art Museum)
- Tuesday - Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm (Beneski Natural History Museum)
Gallery Monitoring:
- Assist in upholding the policies and procedures of the Museum Security Department. Direct inquiries to the Director of Museum Security as necessary.
- Conduct regular patrols in non-gallery areas as a Museum Safety Coordinator.
- Support the museums in managing special events, ensuring compliance with occupancy limits and event protocols (e.g., proximity to artwork, designated no-food areas).
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of event materials as required.
- Complete activity logs, document incidents through detailed reports, and manage email correspondence as needed. Capture documentation through photography.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, problem-solving abilities, time management, interpersonal skills, and customer service orientation.
- Proficiency with Gmail and the ability to learn other software applications.
- Capability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and lift test.
- Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Administration, or Emergency Management, and/or an accredited Law Enforcement or Professional Security Officer Certification, along with additional certifications (CIPS, CPR & First Aid).
- At least 6 months of experience in private security, law enforcement, or a related field.
