POSITION SUMMARY

The primary objective of this role is to operate a large refuse collection vehicle to gather waste or yard debris along designated routes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Navigate a large refuse truck to collect waste or yard debris; adhere to designated routes to ensure efficient collection; unload the vehicle at disposal sites while maneuvering through traffic and various obstacles.
  • Provide leadership and direction to assigned personnel; foster a motivating environment while overseeing work progress and addressing any challenges that arise.
  • Utilize stationary equipment at waste management facilities; operate compactors for waste compression and balers for material bundling; manage equipment such as stump grinders or wood chippers for processing large tree limbs into mulch.
  • Follow all traffic regulations and safety protocols; maintain awareness of surroundings to ensure the safety of oneself, colleagues, and the public; ensure compliance with safety measures among crew members.
  • Collect miscellaneous items from designated locations and dispose of them appropriately.
  • Address customer inquiries and complaints regarding waste collection issues; escalate concerns to the immediate supervisor as necessary.
  • Operate various tools and equipment necessary for waste collection, including shovels, pitchforks, yard rakes, and brooms.
  • Inspect and prepare the vehicle for safe operation at the start of each shift; perform routine maintenance tasks such as refueling and cleaning the vehicle.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary vehicle by removing litter and washing the exterior regularly.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and the public to coordinate work activities and resolve issues.
  • Complete necessary documentation, including forms and reports, as required.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

A High School Diploma is required; one (1) year of experience operating a large commercial vehicle is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge and skills for this position.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements and a satisfactory driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to retain detailed instructions regarding waste collection procedures.
  • Capability to perform basic mathematical calculations and summarize data effectively.
  • Ability to communicate information clearly to clarify details within established policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in operating equipment and machinery requiring precise adjustments.
  • Ability to follow written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions effectively.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and creativity in evaluating information against established criteria.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires medium physical effort, primarily involving driving. Tasks may include lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling medium-weight objects. Visual acuity and the ability to communicate orally are also necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is conducted in various environmental conditions, including exposure to dirt, dust, odors, and noise. Safety measures must be adhered to at all times.
