Patient Care Technician I

The Cardiac Medicine Intermediate Care Unit at UNC Health REX is situated on the 7th floor of the Heart and Vascular Hospital. This unit, comprising 24 beds, provides intermediate care for patients with cardiac issues and various complex co-morbidities, including heart failure, dysrhythmias, heart attacks, and patients undergoing pre- and post-cardiac/vascular procedures. Our team caters to both adult and geriatric patients, utilizing advanced GE monitors and computers to ensure high-quality care.
Key Responsibilities:
1.
Assist healthcare professionals during routine examinations and procedures, ensuring the availability of necessary equipment and supplies, especially in emergencies.
2.In psychiatric settings, support patients in reality orientation, engage in behavior modification plans, provide informal therapy, manage aggressive behaviors, facilitate age-appropriate activities for children, and monitor therapeutic activities to meet patients' emotional and safety needs.
3.Observe, gather, and document patient information while delivering care, promptly reporting any significant changes in patient conditions to a registered nurse or physician.
4.Assist patients and their families during the admission process, orienting them to the healthcare environment and supporting discharge procedures.
5.Deliver care and treatments as outlined in the care plan, including vital sign measurement, specimen collection, catheter care, and simple wound care.
6.Provide direct personal care for daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and assisting with mobility.
7.Perform indirect care tasks, including maintaining cleanliness in the work area, changing linens, restocking supplies, and assisting in the orientation of new staff and students.
8. Reinforce routine patient education provided by registered nurses or physicians and document patient comprehension of instructions.Qualifications:
Education:
- High School diploma or GED
Certification:
- Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
Experience:
- Minimum of six months of relevant nursing assistant experience, which may include completion of a nursing assistant course.
Skills:
- Proficient in verbal and written English and capable of developing basic computer skills.
