The UNC Health REX Cardiac Procedural/Cardiac Medicine Intermediate Care Unit is situated on the 8th floor of the Heart and Vascular Hospital. This unit, consisting of 24 beds, delivers intermediate care to patients with cardiac issues and various complex co-morbidities. Patients may include those who have undergone cardiac and vascular interventions, experienced heart attacks, or have heart failure and dysrhythmias requiring treatment or monitoring. Our staff caters to both adult and geriatric patients.
Each room is equipped with bedside monitors, computers, and scanners to facilitate the care of our intricate cardiac patients.
Care is provided through a collaborative approach involving nurses, care managers, advanced practice providers, physicians, pharmacists, chaplains, patient care technicians, and administrative staff. Specialized technicians monitor patient rhythms from the Telemetry Command Center, offering ongoing support and surveillance for rhythm changes.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Assist healthcare professionals during routine examinations and procedures, including the procurement of necessary equipment and supplies.
2. Review patient care documentation critically, noting any significant changes in patient conditions, and report these to a registered nurse or physician immediately.
3. Perform various clerical tasks such as organizing and prioritizing workloads, greeting and directing visitors, researching information as needed, reviewing orders for accuracy, revising orders as requested, answering phones and patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, and maintaining medical records. Conduct routine quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory management of supplies. Provide administrative support, including performance improvement audits and data entry.
4. Offer clinical support by maintaining cleanliness in the work area, ensuring office equipment is functional, troubleshooting common software and hardware issues, changing linens, checking supply inventory, restocking supplies, transporting patients, supplies, and specimens, and assisting in the orientation of new employees and students.
5. Deliver direct personal care to patients as outlined in care plans, including bathing, dressing, feeding, and assisting with mobility. Measure and document vital signs, height, and weight. Responsibilities may also include specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage.
6. Reinforce routine education provided to patients by registered nurses or physicians and document patient comprehension of instructions. Distribute educational materials as requested by patients or healthcare providers.

Additional Information

Education Requirements:
● High School diploma or GED
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Listed as Nurse Aide I Registry with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
● Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification
Professional Experience Requirements:
● One year of clerical or customer service experience and six months of relevant nursing assistant experience, which may include a nursing assistant course or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Requirements:
● Proficiency in verbal and written English. Ability to develop computer skills if not already competent.
