The Surgical Services Procedure Unit at UNC REX is a dynamic 16-bay facility providing essential preoperative and postoperative care to patients recovering from anesthesia. Our unit specializes in various surgical fields, including ophthalmology, urology, gynecology, and general surgery. In this fast-paced setting, our nursing staff collaborates closely with a skilled multidisciplinary team.


Position Overview:

As a Patient Care Technician I, you will play a vital role in supporting healthcare professionals in delivering high-quality patient care. Your responsibilities will include transporting patients and equipment, preparing and maintaining patient rooms, and performing a variety of clerical and administrative tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the patient care unit.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist healthcare providers during routine examinations and procedures, including the procurement of necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Monitor patient care documentation, noting any significant changes in patients' conditions, and promptly report these to a registered nurse or physician.
  • Perform clerical duties such as organizing workloads, greeting visitors, researching information for healthcare providers, reviewing orders for accuracy, and maintaining medical records.
  • Support clinical operations by maintaining cleanliness in the work area, troubleshooting office equipment, managing supply inventory, and assisting in the orientation of new staff and students.
  • Provide direct personal care to patients, including bathing, dressing, feeding, and assisting with mobility. Measure and record vital signs, height, and weight, and perform other related tasks as outlined in care plans.
  • Reinforce educational information provided to patients by healthcare professionals and ensure understanding of instructions.

Additional Information:
Education Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED)

Licensure/Certification Requirements:
  • Listed as a Nursing Assistant I by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Professional Experience Requirements:
  • Minimum of six (6) months of experience in clerical or customer service roles.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Proficiency in verbal and written English. Ability to develop computer skills as needed.
