Eugene, Oregon, United States Public Defender Services of Lane County Full time

Position Overview

The Public Defender Services of Lane County is in search of a dedicated attorney who embodies vision, integrity, and compassion to oversee our skilled team of legal professionals and support personnel. This role is ideal for an individual with a demonstrated commitment to public defense and a solid history of client-focused representation.

As a prominent non-profit organization established in 1977, our office is situated in the heart of Eugene and stands as the second largest public defense provider in Oregon, as well as the largest law firm in Lane County. We employ 33 attorneys and serve over 4,000 clients annually across various legal matters, including criminal defense, treatment courts, mental health issues, juvenile cases, legal clinics, and municipal appeals. Our operations are guided by our mission: to treat clients with dignity, empower them to make informed decisions, and vigorously defend their rights.

Key Responsibilities

The executive director serves as the public representative of our office, engaging in advocacy within the community and at the state level. This position necessitates the ability to cultivate and sustain relationships with community partners throughout the public safety system, as well as with the Oregon Legislature and the Oregon Public Defense Commission.

Our organization has experienced significant growth and success over the past decade. With state investments in public defense, we have successfully reduced caseloads and enhanced supervisory staffing to mentor and develop our attorneys and support staff. The executive director will oversee team supervisors, maintain open communication with all staff, and report to our board of trustees.

Essential Duties

  • Align with PDSLC's mission and objectives.
  • Engage regularly with senior management and team supervisors.
  • Adapt to changes in the judicial system to advocate for client interests.
  • Foster partnerships with community stakeholders while balancing the adversarial nature of public defense.
  • Collaborate with the business manager and supervisors on human resource matters, including recruitment, performance management, and ensuring a client-centered workforce.
  • Provide consultation and educational support to staff; participate in training initiatives; stay informed about relevant programs for clients.
  • Exhibit professionalism both internally and externally.
  • Train designated backup personnel as necessary.
  • Address ethics inquiries in conjunction with the assistant director, ensuring thorough review of ethical withdrawals.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Management Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in management meetings, contributing to the development and execution of strategic goals.
  • Manage a limited caseload while ensuring coverage for all court appearances.
  • Uphold high ethical standards and protect confidential information.
  • Assist fellow managers in evaluating options prior to decision-making and ensure follow-through on actions.
  • Gather input for and prepare performance evaluations for attorneys and other staff as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree and membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar or another bar association, with the ability to practice law in Oregon.
  • A minimum of 6 years of legal experience.
  • Proven experience in managing a diverse team of attorneys, investigators, and administrative personnel.
  • Strong leadership, management, and communication skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of public defense cases, including adult criminal, civil commitment, and juvenile delinquency and dependency matters.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary for this role ranges from $140,000 to $190,000, commensurate with experience. The organization offers a competitive benefits package, including healthcare and retirement plans, health savings reimbursement, long-term disability insurance, paid family leave, professional liability insurance, and 3 to 5 weeks of paid vacation, among other employee benefits.

Commitment to Equity

PDSLC is dedicated to promoting equity and diversity within our workplace, our hiring practices, and our client representation. We are an equal opportunity employer and encourage applications from individuals belonging to historically underrepresented groups.
