Department Overview

The Department of Earth & Planetary Science, part of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division within the College of Letters and Science, is among the top-ranked programs in the United States, offering six major specializations and several interdisciplinary programs in atmospheric science, climate, environmental geoscience, marine geophysics, and planetary science. The department collaborates with programs in Chemistry, Astronomy, Geography, and Environmental Science and Policy Management. Comprising 40 faculty members, including adjuncts and emeritus, approximately 60 graduate students, 150 undergraduate majors, 30 post-doctoral researchers, and 9 staff FTEs, the department is driven by a fundamental curiosity about Earth and other planets, underpinned by a commitment to equity, accessibility, and inclusion for all.

The Academic HR Analyst plays a vital role in supporting the Chair of the Earth & Planetary Science Department and the Director of the Berkeley Seismological Lab by recommending, developing, implementing, administering, coordinating, and evaluating Academic Human Resource policies, labor contracts, statutes, programs, and procedures. This includes areas such as academic recruitment, appointments, terminations, advancement, compensation, salary administration, faculty welfare programs, visa procurement, faculty misconduct, faculty equity, and position management. Additionally, this position will facilitate the onboarding of departmental postdoctoral scholars, liaise with Berkeley Regional Services, and participate in special projects related to Academic Personnel Administration.

Key Responsibilities

Department HR Policy Expert (25%)
  • Provide strategic advice and counsel to the Department Manager, EPS Chair, and BSL Director by analyzing and interpreting organizational policies, collective bargaining agreements, and academic personnel procedures.
  • Advise departmental supervisors on benefits issues and provide guidance on compensation, personnel policies, and labor relations.
  • Conduct research and analysis to resolve complex HR issues and advise leadership as necessary.
  • Ensure accurate processing and maintenance of department HR records, including audits and comprehensive record-keeping.
  • Stay informed of changes in University rules and regulations affecting academic appointments.

Berkeley Regional Services Liaison (25%)
  • Submit requests for payroll transactions and track cases to ensure smooth workflow.
  • Audit transactions and ensure compliance with policies.
  • Maintain personnel files for staff and audit payroll for accuracy.
  • Provide guidance on compensation programs and policies.
  • Counsel faculty on work-related issues and visa matters.

Academic Review Process Management (25%)
  • Facilitate and manage academic review processes, ensuring timely submission of personnel actions.
  • Assess and summarize data from teaching evaluations for academic personnel actions.
  • Provide complex support to faculty review committees, ensuring compliance with policies.

Student Academic Title Management (20%)
  • Assist in the hiring of student academic titles and ensure compliance with labor laws.
  • Coordinate assignments for graduate student instructors and communicate important HR notifications.

Faculty Search Committee Support (15%)
  • Support search committees in drafting plans and reports, maintaining compliance with affirmative action policies.
  • Administer all phases of the academic search process and liaise with other departments.

Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar Support (10%)
  • Serve as a point of contact for postdocs and visiting scholars, managing community events and resources.

Professional Development (5%)
  • Participate in professional development activities and campus meetings to enhance knowledge and networking.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of academic HR policies and procedures.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and communicate effectively.
  • Proficiency in Google tools, Microsoft Office, and other relevant software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with trends in academia and human resource management.
  • Understanding of risk assessment principles.

The budgeted salary range for this position is $74,300 to $99,000 annually, commensurate with experience. This is a full-time career position eligible for full benefits.
