Department Overview

The Department of Earth & Planetary Science, part of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division within the College of Letters and Science, is recognized as one of the top programs in the USA, offering six major specializations and various interdisciplinary programs in atmospheric science, climate, environmental geoscience, marine geophysics, and planetary science. The department comprises 40 faculty members, including adjuncts and emeritus, approximately 60 graduate students, 150 undergraduate majors, 30 postdoctoral researchers, and 9 staff members. Our mission is driven by a fundamental curiosity about the past, present, and future of Earth and other planets, underpinned by a commitment to equity, accessibility, and inclusion for all.

The Academic HR Analyst plays a crucial role in supporting the Chair of the Earth & Planetary Science Department and the Director of the Berkeley Seismological Lab. This position involves recommending, developing, implementing, administering, coordinating, and evaluating academic human resource policies, labor contracts, statutes, programs, and procedures related to academic recruitment, appointments, terminations, advancement, compensation, salary administration, faculty welfare programs, visa procurement, faculty misconduct, faculty equity, and position management. Additionally, the analyst will onboard departmental postdoctoral scholars, liaise with Berkeley Regional Services, and participate in special projects related to Academic Personnel Administration.

Key Responsibilities

Department HR Policy Expert (25%)
  • Provide strategic advice and counsel to the Department Manager, EPS Chair, and BSL Director by analyzing and interpreting system-wide and organizational policies, collective bargaining agreements, and academic personnel procedures.
  • Advise departmental supervisors on benefits issues and provide guidance on compensation, personnel policies, and labor relations.
  • Conduct research and analysis to resolve complex HR problems and advise leadership as needed.
  • Ensure the processing and maintenance of department HR records, including audits and proper disposal.
  • Stay current on University rules and regulations changes affecting faculty and academic appointments.

Berkeley Regional Services Liaison (25%)
  • Submit requests for payroll transactions and track cases to ensure smooth workflow.
  • Audit transactions and maintain personnel files for staff.
  • Provide guidance on faculty compensation programs and maintain sabbatical credits.
  • Counsel faculty on work-related problems and visa matters.

Academic Review Processes (25%)
  • Facilitate and manage academic review processes, ensuring timely submission of materials for personnel actions.
  • Summarize data from teaching evaluations for inclusion in academic personnel actions.
  • Provide high-level support and analysis in all areas of academic personnel and hiring.

Student Academic Titles Management (20%)
  • Assist in the hiring of student academic titles and ensure compliance with labor laws.
  • Coordinate assignments for graduate student instructors and maintain communication with student employees.

Faculty Search Support (15%)
  • Support faculty search committees in drafting search plans and administering the academic search process.
  • Maintain contact with new faculty members to ensure a smooth transition.

Professional Development (10%)
  • Participate in professional development activities and seek opportunities for leadership roles.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of academic HR policies and procedures.
  • Excellent critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Google tools, Microsoft Office, and Adobe.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of trends in academia and human resource management.

The budgeted salary range for this position is $74,300 to $99,000 yearly, commensurate with experience. This is a full-time career position eligible for full benefits.
