Department Overview

The Department of Earth & Planetary Science, part of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division within the College of Letters and Science, is among the top-ranked programs in the United States, offering six major specializations and various interdisciplinary programs. Our department collaborates with Chemistry, Astronomy, Geography, and Environmental Science and Policy Management, comprising 40 faculty members, approximately 60 graduate students, and 150 undergraduate majors, along with 30 post-doctoral researchers and 9 staff members. Our mission is driven by a fundamental curiosity about Earth and other planets, with a strong commitment to equity, accessibility, and inclusion.

The Academic HR Analyst plays a crucial role in supporting the Chair of the Earth & Planetary Science Department and the Director of the Berkeley Seismological Lab. This position involves recommending, developing, implementing, administering, coordinating, and evaluating Academic Human Resource policies, labor contracts, and procedures related to academic recruitment, appointments, terminations, advancements, compensation, faculty welfare programs, visa procurement, faculty misconduct, and position management. Additionally, the analyst will onboard postdoctoral scholars, liaise with Berkeley Regional Services, and participate in special projects related to Academic Personnel Administration.

Key Responsibilities

Department HR Policy Expert (25%)
  • Provide strategic advice to department leadership by analyzing and interpreting policies, collective bargaining agreements, and academic personnel procedures.
  • Advise supervisors on benefits issues and provide guidance on compensation and labor relations.
  • Conduct research and analysis to resolve complex HR issues and maintain department HR records.
  • Stay informed on University policy changes affecting faculty and academic appointments.

Berkeley Regional Services Liaison (25%)
  • Submit requests for payroll transactions and track cases to ensure smooth workflow.
  • Audit transactions and maintain personnel files for staff.
  • Provide guidance on academic personnel policies and maintain sabbatical credits.

Academic Review Process Management (25%)
  • Facilitate academic review processes, ensuring timely submission of personnel actions.
  • Summarize data from teaching evaluations for academic personnel actions.
  • Provide high-level support and analysis in all areas of academic personnel and hiring.

Student Academic Title Management (20%)
  • Assist in the hiring of student academic titles and ensure compliance with labor laws.
  • Coordinate assignments for graduate student instructors and maintain communication with student employees.

Faculty Search Committee Support (15%)
  • Support faculty search committees in drafting search plans and managing applications.
  • Coordinate travel arrangements for finalist candidates and assist with visa issues.

Additional Responsibilities (10%)
  • Serve as a point of contact for postdoctoral scholars and visiting scholars, managing departmental communications.

Professional Development (5%)
  • Engage in professional development activities and participate in campus meetings.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of academic HR policies and procedures.
  • Excellent critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Google tools, Microsoft Office, and Adobe.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with trends in academia and human resource management.

The budgeted salary range for this position is $74,300 to $99,000 annually, commensurate with experience. This is a full-time career position eligible for comprehensive benefits.
