Position Overview:

The Senior Reliability Engineer within the Reliability Assessment, Performance Analysis (RAPA), and Technical Services is responsible for coordinating initiatives that span multiple program areas within RAPA, including Performance Analysis, Reliability Assessments, and data validation. This role also involves supporting transmission and resource adequacy studies while conducting reliability assessments in partnership with SERC stakeholders. Essential skills include leadership, transmission planning expertise, and in-depth knowledge of the electric utility sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct transmission adequacy studies, including steady state, stability, and short circuit analyses.
  • Perform resource adequacy studies utilizing both deterministic and probabilistic methodologies.
  • Facilitate and guide SERC stakeholder technical committees, developing solutions that address reliability risks.
  • Represent regional perspectives on Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) initiatives and working groups.
  • Implement project management techniques to enhance the efficiency of SERC's data quality and assessment processes.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with NERC and neighboring Regional Entities to improve coordination and processes.
  • Engage with stakeholders and NERC to communicate SERC's positions on transmission and resource planning issues.
  • Contribute to SERC's reliability risk management program by identifying and analyzing trends.
  • Provide guidance on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Share expertise through publications and training sessions for stakeholders.
  • Utilize industry knowledge to contribute to NERC reliability standards development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline is required; a Master's degree or PhD in Power Systems is preferred.
  • A minimum of ten years of experience in the electric utility industry, specifically in transmission planning and policy.
  • Extensive knowledge of electric utility operations, including transmission and resource planning, and power system modeling.
  • Proficiency in software tools (PSSE, TARA, SERVM) used for transmission planning and resource adequacy studies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to summarize complex issues effectively.
  • Familiarity with protection and control systems is advantageous.
  • Understanding of business management principles related to resource allocation and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with various management levels and external stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of NERC Reliability Standards.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Demonstrated research, conflict resolution, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary.
  • Experience in program management is preferred.
