Position Overview

The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is a prominent national organization dedicated to advancing racial justice through legal advocacy. Established in 1963, the Committee works tirelessly to ensure that marginalized communities have equitable access to justice and representation.

Role Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized individual to fill the role of Paralegal. This position will play a crucial part in supporting various legal initiatives within the organization, which encompass critical areas such as Criminal Justice, Digital Justice, Economic Justice, Educational Opportunities, Fair Housing, Race-Motivated Violence and Intimidation, and Voting Rights.

Key Responsibilities

The Paralegal will be responsible for:

  • Organizing and managing case files within the electronic case management system, ensuring all documents and information are accurately maintained.
  • Assisting in the preparation, editing, and filing of legal documents, including briefs and exhibits, while ensuring proper formatting and citation.
  • Coordinating administrative tasks related to litigation and project work, such as organizing discovery processes and scheduling necessary meetings.
  • Drafting and proofreading standard legal documents.
  • Staying updated on relevant court rules and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Providing support during hearings, trials, and oral arguments.
  • Conducting factual research and utilizing public records and databases.
  • Preparing internal reports and updates for various stakeholders.
  • Collaborating with project staff and the Communications team to maintain and update web content.
  • Managing communications with partners and co-counsel.
  • Coordinating events and meetings as needed.
  • Ensuring timely processing of administrative tasks in collaboration with accounting.
  • Performing additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • A Bachelor's Degree and/or a Paralegal Certificate is preferred.
  • A strong commitment to civil rights and racial justice.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience, ideally in a paralegal capacity.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational abilities, with a knack for multitasking and prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Proficient writing and editing skills.
  • The capability to analyze and summarize factual information efficiently.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • High proficiency in Office 365 applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as familiarity with video conferencing tools.
  • Experience with databases and project management software is a plus.
  • A background in diverse environments and experience working with communities of color and low-income populations is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
