We deliver direct services to address immediate needs while also engaging in advocacy and community organizing to drive systemic change across various issues, including housing, immigration, and employment.

Role Description:

Dolores Street Community Services is in search of a Full-Time Senior Tenant Advocacy Coordinator to join our Housing Rights Initiative. This role involves outreach, education, and direct support aimed at enhancing living conditions for tenants residing in Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels within the Mission District.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in tenant outreach within SRO buildings and distribute educational resources to families and individuals.
  • Conduct intake assessments and provide housing counseling to low-income tenants, including those who are monolingual Spanish speakers, by evaluating housing challenges and offering pertinent information.
  • Advocate for tenants by collaborating with external agencies on code enforcement and eviction prevention strategies to promote housing stability.
  • Maintain accurate and timely updates of clients' housing situations in the database, ensuring all supporting documentation adheres to organizational policies.
  • Facilitate warm referrals to additional programs for financial assistance, counseling, or other supportive services tailored to tenants' needs.
  • Coordinate and lead leadership development opportunities, educational workshops, outreach, and preventive initiatives in SRO hotels.
  • Assist in planning and promoting tenant participation in associations, meetings, legal clinics, community events, and mobilizations through effective outreach and follow-up.
  • Engage in advocacy and organizing efforts focused on the needs of SRO families, including strategizing achievable goals and representing tenant issues in local government forums.
  • Collaborate with fellow staff members to integrate tenant feedback on broader community issues such as land use, civic engagement, immigrant rights, and economic justice.
  • Attend regular meetings with supervisors to report on outreach efforts, address challenges, and strategize future activities.
  • Work alongside the Program Manager to develop work plans and provide mentorship to other organizers and outreach personnel.
  • Participate in weekend or evening community events as required.

Additional Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Conduct all business in line with the Employee Handbook, exercising sound judgment in the best interests of the agency and community.
  • Commit to treating every community member with respect and dignity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience and passion for working with low-income and immigrant communities on issues related to affordable housing, land use, and immigrant rights; familiarity with these matters in the Mission District is highly desirable.
  • Dedication to a broader vision of immigrant, housing, and economic justice.
  • Ability to engage with a diverse range of clients with cultural sensitivity and patience.
  • Capability to delegate tasks and responsibilities within a team under the guidance of the Program Manager.
  • Proficiency in assuming responsibility and working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong judgment, multitasking abilities, and deadline management skills.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply information from manuals, policies, and technical procedures.
  • Ideal candidates will have a minimum of two years' experience as an organizer, tenant rights advocate, or paralegal, with a proven track record of building trust with low-income immigrant families.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Bilingual proficiency in spoken and written Spanish is highly preferred.

Dolores Street Community Services is an equal-opportunity employer that values lived experience and seeks a diverse applicant pool. We encourage individuals from various backgrounds, including people of color, women, older adults, members of the LGBTQ community, and individuals with disabilities, to apply.
