Job Overview

The Automotive Procurement Specialist plays a crucial role in managing the acquisition of all non-private party vehicles for Schnitzer Steel. This position involves bidding on and purchasing vehicles from external suppliers, as well as coordinating with towing services to ensure timely delivery to designated locations. The specialist will collaborate with internal teams to facilitate accurate payments for newly acquired vehicles and engage with vendors to negotiate competitive pricing while exploring new purchasing opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Source vehicles for all Schnitzer Steel facilities by actively bidding and purchasing from external suppliers.
  • Evaluate towing and vehicle pricing to confirm accuracy.
  • Verify vendor payments to ensure correct amounts are disbursed.
  • Conduct market research to identify and recruit new towing vendors.
  • Develop relationships with non-profit organizations and external fleet services to generate new business leads.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for local towing companies regarding vehicle transfers.
  • Communicate market trends and local scrap pricing to Regional Purchasing Managers to ensure alignment with market conditions.
  • Ensure that vehicle purchasing targets are consistently met.
  • Foster strong relationships with existing customers.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and report any unsafe practices to management.
  • Engage in proactive team efforts to meet departmental and organizational objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in vehicle purchasing, either directly or indirectly, is essential.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of vehicle types, brands, and their approximate values.
  • A two-year degree is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Proficient in computer operations, including email and internet applications.
  • Willingness to travel and drive long distances.
  • Possession of a personal vehicle and a valid driver's license.
  • Must maintain insurance coverage that meets company standards.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity to handle items effectively.
  • Capability to climb and maintain balance, with good peripheral and depth perception.
  • Engage in light to moderate physical activities as part of daily tasks.

Work Environment:

  • Occasional exposure to both indoor and outdoor environments with adequate ventilation.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions and moderate noise levels typical of an office setting.
