Position Overview:

Stanford University is on the lookout for a Life Science Research Professional 2 to join the Deisseroth Lab within the CNC (Cracking the Neural Code) Program. This role involves undertaking advanced functions and responsibilities related to specified research initiatives, as well as independently managing segments of these projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently manage segments of research projects and provide insights on experimental frameworks and research trajectories to the principal investigator.
  • Conduct sophisticated laboratory and/or field experiments to collect data for significant research endeavors.
  • Analyze and interpret results, often in the absence of established guidelines, and refine existing methods and protocols as necessary.
  • Design new research protocols when existing literature does not provide adequate guidance or when standard procedures require adaptation.
  • Engage in collaborative efforts across various disciplines and departments.
  • Maintain an ongoing review of relevant literature to stay informed about new methodologies and related research, applying this knowledge to current projects and the development of innovative protocols.
  • Contribute meaningfully to the drafting of research papers for publication, particularly in the results section, and present findings at academic gatherings.
  • Manage the supply and equipment budget under the oversight of the principal investigator or business manager.
  • Collaborate with the health and safety department to ensure laboratory compliance with regulations and necessary training.
  • Supervise staff or students as required, providing guidance on techniques and project-related consultations, and serve as a technical resource for other research personnel.
  • Oversee daily laboratory operations, including maintenance, inventory management, and general lab support, while assisting with the procurement of laboratory equipment when needed.

Compensation:

The anticipated salary range for this position is between $71,000 and $88,000 annually. This range reflects Stanford University's good faith estimate of what it expects to pay for this role. The final compensation will be determined based on various factors, including the responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget constraints, internal equity, geographic location, and external market rates for similar roles.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

A Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline and two years of pertinent work experience; or a Master's degree in a related scientific field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of scientific principles.
  • Proficient computer skills with the ability to quickly learn and master relevant software, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Strong analytical capabilities and sound judgment.
  • Ability to maintain meticulous records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Capacity to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a proven ability to accurately complete detailed tasks.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent standing, walking, twisting, bending, stooping, squatting, and fine manipulation, as well as performing desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasional sitting, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and sorting paperwork.
  • Must possess correctable vision to fulfill job duties.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work in environments that may be dusty, dirty, or odorous.

Working Conditions:

  • May require working in environments where animals are utilized for research and teaching.
