Position Overview: Stanford University is looking for a Life Science Research Professional 2 to engage in intricate functions and tasks associated with specific research initiatives, and to autonomously manage a segment of the research project(s).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently execute a segment of the research project(s) and provide insights on experimental frameworks and/or research trajectories to the principal investigator.
  • Conduct sophisticated (laboratory and/or field) experiments to collect data for a significant research project.
  • Analyze and interpret results, often in the absence of clear guidelines, and adjust existing methods and protocols as necessary.
  • Formulate new research protocols when appropriate methodologies are not available in existing literature or when adaptations of standard procedures are required.
  • Collaborate within multidisciplinary teams across various faculties or schools.
  • Engage in continuous literature review to stay updated with new methodologies and related research; apply findings to ongoing research and the development of new protocols.
  • Contribute significantly to the drafting of papers for publication, particularly in the results section, and to the dissemination of findings. Present ongoing research to peers and/or at academic conferences.
  • Manage supply and equipment budgets under the guidance of the principal investigator or business manager.
  • Work alongside the health and safety department to ensure laboratory compliance with regulations and all necessary training.
  • Oversee (formally or informally) staff or students as required, providing guidance on techniques and consulting on project work. Act as a technical resource for other research personnel.
  • Supervise the daily operations of the laboratory, including maintenance; manage lab inventory, chemical stocks, and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in immunology and molecular biology; experience in supervising and/or training laboratory assistants and students.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting laboratory equipment issues and coordinating service when necessary.
  • Experience in managing laboratory workflows, including supply inventory and ordering.
  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with software applications.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and thorough records consistently.
  • Capability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Proficient in writing technical documents in scientific terminology.
  • Skills in conducting literature searches and retrievals.
  • Working knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Preferred experience with flow cytometry data analysis software.
  • Preferred experience with statistical software such as GraphPad Prism or R.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in teams.

Education & Experience (Required):

A Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline and two years of pertinent work experience; or a Master's degree in a related scientific field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required):

  • Thorough understanding of scientific principles.
  • General computer skills and the ability to quickly learn and master various computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Strong analytical abilities and sound judgment.
  • Capability to maintain detailed records of experiments and their outcomes.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed tasks.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent standing, walking, twisting, bending, stooping, squatting, light grasping, fine manipulation, forceful grasping, desk-based computer tasks, telephone use, handwriting, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects over 40 pounds.
  • Occasional sitting, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and working above shoulder level, sorting, and filing paperwork or materials.
  • Rarely climbing, scrubbing, sweeping, mopping, chopping, mixing, or operating hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctable vision to perform job duties.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

Working Conditions:

  • May involve working in close proximity to bloodborne pathogens.
  • May require work in environments where animals are utilized for teaching and research.
  • Position may at times necessitate working with or being in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
  • Employee must perform tasks requiring the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, protective clothing, gloves, and possibly a respirator.
  • May require extended or unusual work hours based on research demands and business needs.

The expected pay range for this position is $71,000 to $88,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
