Position Overview: Stanford University is looking for a Life Science Research Professional 2 to engage in intricate functions and activities associated with designated research initiatives, while independently executing a segment of the research project(s).
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct independent segments of research projects, providing insights on experimental frameworks and research trajectories to the principal investigator.
- Execute sophisticated laboratory and/or field experiments to collect data for significant research projects.
- Analyze and interpret results, often in the absence of established guidelines, and adjust existing methodologies and protocols as necessary.
- Formulate new research protocols when existing literature lacks appropriate guidelines or when modifications to standard procedures are required.
- Collaborate within multidisciplinary teams across various faculties or schools.
- Engage in continuous literature reviews to stay updated with new methodologies and relevant research, applying this knowledge to ongoing research and the development of new protocols.
- Contribute significantly to the drafting of research papers for publication, particularly in the results section, and present ongoing work at academic conferences.
- Manage the supply and equipment budget under the oversight of the principal investigator or business manager.
- Coordinate with the health and safety department to ensure laboratory compliance with regulations and required training.
- Supervise staff or students as necessary, providing guidance on techniques and consultation on project work, serving as a technical resource for other research personnel.
- Oversee daily laboratory operations, including maintenance, inventory management, and general lab support, and assist with the procurement of laboratory equipment.
Desired Qualifications:
- Proven experience in immunology and molecular biology, including supervising and training laboratory assistants and students.
- Ability to troubleshoot laboratory equipment issues and arrange for service when needed.
- Experience in managing laboratory workflows, including supply inventory and ordering processes.
- Proficient in computer operations and software applications.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate and thorough records.
- Effective prioritization of tasks.
- Capability to write technical documents in scientific terminology.
- Skills in conducting literature searches and retrievals.
- Familiarity with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Preferred experience with flow cytometry data analysis software and statistical software such as GraphPad Prism or R.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in teams.
Education & Experience (Required):
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline and two years of pertinent work experience; or a Master's degree in a related scientific field.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required):
- Thorough understanding of scientific principles.
- General computer skills with the ability to quickly learn and master various computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
- Strong analytical capabilities and sound judgment.
- Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and their outcomes.
- Capacity to work under deadlines with general guidance.
- Excellent organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent standing, walking, twisting, bending, stooping, squatting, and performing desk-based computer tasks.
- Occasional sitting, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and sorting paperwork.
- Must have correctable vision to perform job duties.
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing over 40 pounds.
- Ability to work in a potentially dusty and odorous environment.
Working Conditions:
- May involve exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
- Work may occur in environments where animals are utilized for research and teaching.
- Tasks may require the use of personal protective equipment.
