SUMMARY:
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for executing designated nursing duties aimed at ensuring the comfort and well-being of patients. This role involves delivering specific aspects of nursing care to Medical Surgical patients under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The LPN plays a vital role in supporting the patient care unit through medication administration, patient assessments, dressing changes, and other essential patient care responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The LPN provides direct patient care, assisting individuals with daily living activities while promoting independence when suitable. Responsibilities include evaluating patient outcomes, consulting with other healthcare professionals as necessary, and modifying nursing care strategies to guarantee optimal patient care.
The LPN reinforces the hospital's philosophy, policies, and procedures to patients and their families. They collaborate with registered nurses to address the educational needs of patients and implement instructional activities alongside therapists, pharmacists, and other specialists.
Key duties include demonstrating procedures and testing materials, encouraging patient participation in care processes, and providing informational resources while addressing specific concerns. The LPN maintains current and confidential patient records, documenting the type of instruction provided and other relevant information.
In case of any unusual or unexpected events, changes in patient condition, or issues requiring direct physician consultation, the LPN promptly notifies the physician on call. They assess patient care outcomes, work with registered nurses to adjust care processes as needed, and contribute to the development and execution of patient care plans.
The LPN ensures appropriate, direct patient care in assigned areas while utilizing aseptic techniques. They assist physicians during examinations, procedures, and other direct patient care activities.
Additionally, the LPN consults with Infection Control under the direct supervision of the registered nurse regarding the implementation of infection control protocols and the identification and isolation of infections. They conduct daily inspections of the area to ensure compliance with policies, regulations, and standards, taking corrective actions when necessary and addressing workplace safety concerns.
The LPN adheres to Tucson Medical Center's organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies, and standards while performing related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program or a technical/vocational school.
EXPERIENCE: Preferred two (2) years of practical nursing experience.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: LPN license valid in the state of Arizona and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Additional certifications may be necessary per department requirements.
